In a report by Bahrami Children's Hospital Public Relations, a cross sectional study was done to identify the underlying causes of septicemia in patients below 15 years of age at Bahrami Children’s Hospital by Dr. Ali Akbar Rahbarimanesh, Dr. Peyman Salamati and Dr. Maryam Alizadeh. The authors have studies the risk factors for sepsis and septic shock in children and infants referred to Bahrami Children ’s Hospital from 2001 to 2006.

The researchers evaluated underlying diseases, presence of FTT, interventions done for the patient, microorganism causing sepsis or septic shock. They found intravenous catheters as the most common intervention seen in these causes. The second most common underlying disease in these patients was cerebral palsy followed by diabetes mellitus and the most common microorganism causing sepsis and septic shock in these cases was Entrococci followed by E. coli. This study demonstrated the need to realize these risk factors and more effective and prompt treatment to be done for the affected patients.
