TUMSPR News: In a message on vaccination week 24 – 30 April 2010, Dr. Hussein A. Gezairy, the director for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) calls for more action to overcome the challenges and strengthen partnership.

Dr. Hussein A. Gezairy, the director for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) has called for more action regarding the “Vaccination Week” initiative for overcoming the challenges and strengthening partnership.

Dr. Gezairy who is an affiliated faculty member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), calls immunization as one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions, with a proven record and success in protecting people against vaccine-preventable diseases. He then warns about the risks facing the undertaking and says: “However, immunization is currently facing unprecedented challenges which put these achievements at risk. Therefore, we have to do more than “business as usual”. This means combining innovative approaches and solutions in order to remove barriers, such as misinformation, misperceptions and stagnating political and financial commitment. It also means working harder to promote demand and utilization of immunization services, strengthen partnerships and ensure an appropriate allocation of resources”.

“Accordingly, the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, in cooperation with UNICEF, is launching the inaugural Vaccination Week in the Eastern Mediterranean Region initiative during the week of 24 to 30 April 2010. Vaccination Week will be an annual region-wide initiative celebrating and promoting immunization through advocacy, education and communication activities. We are joining the WHO regions of the Americas and Europe and their nearly 80 participating countries, in an effort towards establishing a Global Vaccination Week, possibly in 2011. It is my firm belief that our continued collaboration will make this initiative a success”.

All the 22 countries, including Iran, of the region have participated in the first vaccination week.

TUMS announced the 100% health coverage by its health centers in Tehran. One-third of Tehran population which surmount 4.4 million people is under the coverage of the University.
