For the first time, 112 countries simultaneously launch immunization campaigns on April 23 to 30, 2010. This health investment has been synonymous with saving lives and protecting against vaccine-preventable communicable diseases.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) goal for holding “Immunization Week” is to expand immunization coverage and raise awareness of the importance of vaccines.

In the Eastern Mediterranean region alone, vaccination has resulted in
• Eradication of smallpox.
• Increase in vaccination coverage of diphtheria–tetanus–pertusis (DTP3) from 18% in 1980 to 87% in 2009.
• Reaching the 90% measles mortality reduction goal three years ahead of schedule.
• Vaccinating more than 200 million people against measles in 1994 to 2009.
• Maintaining 20 polio-free countries.

Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has an essential role for the vaccination of the population under its coverage in southern Tehran, Shar-e-ray and Islamshar by three district health centers with tens of health posts, health houses, urban and rural health centers.
