Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education used to publish World University Rankings for the top 500 universities on yearly basis since 2004. However, from this year on, QS World University Rankings will be published solely by QS in partnership with Scopus, part of the Elsevier publishing from 2010 onwards.

In September 2010, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) with the exclusive rights to the domain name of QS World University Rankings, published the rankings independently of Times Higher Education for the first time. These rankings will be produced using data collected and analyzed by QS and Scopus, part of the Elsevier publishing company.

While QS intends to increase the number of respondents to its surveys it is not changing them fundamentally, instead building on them with initiatives such as the QS Asian University Rankings, published in 2010 for the second time.

Times Higher Education also signed an agreement with Thomson Reuters in 2009 to provide the data for a new university rankings, also to be published for the first time in September 2010. Due to the concerns Times Higher Education had over the data collected by the previous index they have committed to developing a new rankings methodology in the coming months, in consultation with its readers, its editorial board and the firm.

Thomson Reuters will collect and analyze the data used to produce the rankings on behalf of Times Higher Education for 2010. As this is an entirely new index and methodology structure only once their index has been published will the world be able to judge their efforts. Because Times Higher Education decided to split with QS and create the Times Higher Education World University Rankings after receiving serials of complaints against QS's quality, the QS World University Rankings will be published solely by QS from 2010 onwards. Nevertheless, THE’s partner is already under criticisms for its ISI related calculations for journals' impact factor, something that will cast shadow over the new partnership if things are going to be seen by the critics in the same manner.
