Istanbul University Rector, Accompanying Delegation Meet with TUMS Chancellor

TUMSPR News: The rector of Istanbul University, Dr. Yunus Söylet and the accompanying delegation met with TUMS chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani to explore common interests in the prospective cooperation between the two universities on May 23, 2010.


Dr. Yunus Söylet, the rector of Istanbul University, Dr. Mehmet Şükrü Tekbaş, the chairman of the academic relations committee and the accompanying delegation met with the chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Dr. Bagher Larijani to explore common interests in the prospective cooperation between the two universities on May 23, 2010. Dr. Söylet called the beginning steps as very crucial in forming prospective collaborations.

Welcoming the guests, Dr. Larijani gave a brief introduction of the University, including its more than 9000 students, its 47 research centers, its eight centers of excellence that some of them are regionally dominant research centers, the top rank in research and education the University has achieved in the past years among peer universities domestically and the recent 368th international rank by Times Higher Education (THE), the health system that covers one-third of Tehran and its suburban areas, which mounts to a population of about 4.4 million people, the capability of Iran’s health research system in redirecting and shaping the state’s health policy. Then the chancellor introduced some of the schools that were unique to the University, such as the the School of Traditional Medicine that recruits students among medical doctors which was welcomed by the rector.



Professor Söylet appreciating TUMS undertakings in research and education admired all the attention and focus the University has paid to offer all the medical specialties and fellowships and its health programs and hinted at the long-lived tendency among the policy makers in Turkey to separate Science and Medical Ministries.


Later, Dr. Mehmet Şükrü Tekbaş, the chairman of the academic relations committee of Istanbul University introduced the University and talked about its evolution from Madrasah period (1453-1846), to Darülfünun period (1846-1933) until the establishment of Istanbul University in 1933. He then divided the university into two medical sciences and business schools, the business school being established and supported by Harvard Business School in 1954. He then talked about the number of academic exchange agreements the university had accomplished which included 33 ongoing agreements internationally and 425 Erasmus-type ones.


On a question raised by Dr. Ghazi Khansari, TUMS International Relations Office manager, on the number of foreign student at the University, Dr. Mehmet Şükrü Tekbaş put the number at 3400 who were mostly from Turkish speaking states and the Eastern Europe among other states from all over the world.

Finally, TUMS chancellor suggested a student and faculty exchange program that included short term courses which was welcome by the Turkish counterparts. Gifts were later exchanged between the two chancellors as a remembrance for the occasion which both sides called it fruitful.
The delegation later visited TUMS History of Medicine Museum.

Prof. Yunus Söylet, a pediatric urologist, was selected as the rector of Istanbul University in 2008 and was appointed to the post by Turkey’s president after serving at the Health Ministry from 2006-2008.

The number of students studying in Istanbul University is more than 71000, including more than 14000 graduate and 56000 undergraduate students
