TUMSPR News: In a short interview with Ms. Mandy Mok from QS Asia upon a day-long meeting on university rankings held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences On October 3, 2010, she expresses her opinion on the discussions and suggests ways to improve the rankings.
In a short interview with Dr. S. Behnam Hashemi from TUMS Public Relations, Ms. Mandy, Mok from QS-Asia, suggests ways to improve university rankings upon a day-long meeting on the issue. The meeting was held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences On October 3, 2010.
Dr. Hashemi: It’s an honor to have you here in our university, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. In a nutshell, how do you conclude this session, this workshop?
Ms. Mandy Mok: I would like to think that the Iranian universities are really up and coming into the world [stage], they are starting to notice that the quality of education must be improved, however, having said that, I am sure that many many good universities [are there] here, but it’s just that the world doesn’t know.
You are not as savvy as other peers in terms of promoting yourself, internationally. So…, therefore, even though you do a lot of good, the world doesn’t know yet. So, you’ve gotta work harder on that sector.
Dr. Hashemi: Do you have some suggestions for doing this?
Ms. Mok: Yes. I think, you let your strengths and I am proposing a pavilion, an Iranian pavilion, just like other countries: the Turkish, the South Africans, even the South Africans are promoting themselves in the United States.
I have proposed three media that could actually push your name out there very very quickly and very efficiently:
1- You ought to showcase at Mena which the Iranians can do a supplement there,
2- [QS-]Maple Conference, of course and
3- [QS-]Apple Conference where you can get a pavilion
Dr. Hashemi: Do you suggest using consultations from outside the university, for instance from the QS itself or similar institutes?
Ms. Mok: Yes, of course! Yes, because you do need outside expertise. You need someone from outside looking in rather that someone that’s already in and, you know, that’s [sometimes] too cloudy that they can’t see.
Dr. Hashemi: I really appreciate your presence in Iran.
Ms. Mok: Thank you very much. My honor.
Dr. Hashemi: Sure. That’s ours. Thanks.
