TUMSPR: TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani announces launching of the National Osteoporosis Network while the University holds a three-day Osteoporosis Workshop for ECO member states delegates.
Dr. Bagher Larijani, the chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), announces launching of the National Osteoporosis Network while the University holds a three-day Osteoporosis Workshop for ECO member state delegates which take place from October 17 to 19, 2010.
The head of TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute also put the number of those with some degrees of osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency at 40%. Moreover, he added that 40—80% of people in Iran have vitamin D deficiency.
The chancellor also informed about fortification of milk with vitamin D which is one of the largest national projects run by the University and the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
On getting in touch with the public and the scholarly society, the chancellor said a website with a major focus on osteoporosis has been launched and more than 150 scientific articles have been published so far and more than 300 articles have been presented in congresses and an osteoporosis clinic has been established too.
On cooperation with the Iranian Osteoporosis Society, the chancellor said two joint international congresses will be held in Tehran this year.
On the main causes of the disease, Dr. Larijani said that sedentary life style, fast food consumption and vitamin D deficiency have predisposed the society to the disease which is one of the main challenges of the health system as we are going to have an aging society.
