TUMSPR News: The academic director of pre-clinical curriculum at the University of Durham, professor Hamilton gave a presentation at the 2nd symposium on the medical schools curriculum revision held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences on April 26, 2010.


Professor John Hamilton the academic director of pre-clinical curriculum at the University of Durham, gave a presentation on the role of basic sciences in medical education at the 2nd symposium on the medical schools curriculum revision held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences on April 26, 2010.

The opening speech was given by Dr. Nayeri, the dean of TUMS medical school which was concentrated on changes in medical school curriculum to bridge the gap between basic and clinical sciences by integrating a pre-clinical course for consolidating the materials thought at the first 2-3 years. She then called for the cooperation from of all the faculty members at the school. The thoughts of this change had emerged in 2005 and TUMS has been preparing hard to produce a model that fits the present times needs and its output results in a more problem-oriented medical education. She hoped the undertakings bear fruit for November 2011.

Dr. Mirzazadeh, the manager of the Office for Medical School Education Development, reminding the objectives of the first symposium on the integration of basic and clinical sciences, hoped the discussions strengthen the role of basic sciences in the medical doctors future career.

Professor Hamilton and Dr. Kashani each gave a presentation on "the role of basic sciences in medical education" and "anatomy teachings in different curricula" respectively.

Professor John Hamilton undertook various house jobs in London and Zambia before joining the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of McMaster in 1969. In 1981 he joined the Population Health Nutrition Division of the World Bank and in 1984 was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle, Australia. For WHO, He chaired the Diarrheal Diseases Control Programme at WHO for five years and was a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Health Manpower. He completed 14 years as Dean at the end of 1997 and in September 2000, he took the position of Academic Director of the new pre-clinical program at the University of Durham, UK, in cooperation with the University of Newcastle, UK. This curriculum has a wide community orientation in relation to the economic, social and health inequities within the previously heavily industrialized north east of England.
