Former UN Messenger of Peace Helping Fight against Tuberculosis in Iran

TUMSPR News: Ms. Anna Cataldi, the well-known Stop TB Ambassador, visited one of TUMS Health Centers to closely witness provision of TB services on April 12, 2010.
Based on the report by the Southern Tehran District Health Center’s Public Relations, Ms. Anna Cataldi, the well-known Stop TB Ambassador, visited Shahid Ahmadi Urban Health Center to closely witness provision of TB services on April 12, 2010.
In her visit, Iran’s health volunteer program which started 1993 was briefly introduced by some of the authorities of the DHC and participation of volunteers in health activities was explained which was welcome by Ms. Cataldi.
Before her trip to Iran, Ms. Cataldi had visited Pakistan to raise awareness about the disease.
Cataldi, an Italian journalist and a health advocate, who was appointed as a UN Messenger of Peace in 1998 by the former UN Secretary General Mr. Kofi Annan, served in this role until 2007 and from that time on, she was appointed as an Ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership to raise awareness worldwide about the unfair burden of tuberculosis on refugees, migrants, people living in poverty and other disadvantaged groups.
Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has three district health centers, Shr-e-Ray, Islamshahr and Southern Tehran District Health Centers, to provide health coverage to more than 4.4 million people, one-third of Tehran population. Each DHC has a large number of urban and rural health centers depending on their location in addition to health houses in villages and health posts in cities.
