TUMS Celebrates its 50th Liver Transplant

TUMSPR News: The head of the Liver Transplant Ward of TUMS Imam Khomeini Hospital, Dr. Jafarian, some authorities from the Ministry of Health, the recipients and their family celebrated the 50th liver transplant at the hospital on December 3, 2009.


Dr. Jafarian, the head of the Liver Transplant Ward of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Imam Khomeini Complex Hospital, Nayeri, one of the health minister’s counselors the vice-minister for education , Dr. Mohagheghi, some recipients and their families celebrated the 50th liver transplant at the hospital on December 3, 2009.

The mean age of liver transplant recipients has been 36 years in this hospital with equal male/female distribution and an age range of 8 to 63 years, as the head of GI Disease Department of the School of Medicine, Dr. Nasiri, put it.

The first liver transplant was done in 2001 in this hospital and nine operations were carried out up to 2004 when it came to a halt for two years. But since 2006, the operations have picked up there.
Dr. Nasiri pinpoints the most important cause of hepatic failure as hepatic rheumatism, followed in rank by fatty liver, hepatitis B, C and some diseases with metabolic and genetic origin.
