Date: 10/4/2009
TUMSPR News: World Mental Health Day, on October 10, 2009, will create the opportunity to promote more awareness about mental illnesses, help invest to prevent them and more adequately provide treatment services.
Mental and behavioral disorders in conjunction with neurological diseases are the sources of immense suffering with huge economic losses. The sufferings are always accompanied by poor quality of life, lower social life events participation and higher death rates.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, 154 million people suffered only from depression worldwide (2002), and a wide array of other mental disorders add to this number too (1).
Numerous activities are directly or indirectly related to mental well-being that are included in the WHO's definition of health: "A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease". Mental health is related to the promotion of well-being, the prevention of mental disorders, and the treatment and rehabilitation of people affected by mental disorders (2).
Creating living conditions and environments that support mental health and allow people to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles will promote mental health. This effort increases the chances of more people to experience better mental health (3).
