UT and TUMS Mutually Commence the New Academic Year
Date: 10/1/2009

TUMSPR News: According to TUMS public relations reporters, the new academic year of both universities and research centers was officially commenced on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Based on the news dispatched by the Public Relations reporters of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), a gathering participated by the University of Tehran (UT) chancellor, Dr. Farhad Rahbar, TUMS chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, minister of health, Dr. Vahid-dastjerdi, minister of science, Mr. Daneshjou, students who had ranked high at the national university entrance exam and some faculty members and authorities of both university celebrated the new academic year. The venue was UT’s Allameh Amini Conference Hall.

TUMS chancellor, Dr. Larijani, welcoming the students and faculty members, hinted at the occasion’s coincidence with the 75th year of the university’s establishment and its prosperity despite its long history. He exemplified the saying by referencing to the scientific growth and bulk of scientific data produced by the university in 2001 (1.6%) and in 2009 (9%) of the total national output. He also said that the scientific publications of the country has increased 10 times in the past 10 years and Iran has presently the 42nd rank among 142 countries by ISI ranking system and it is the 25th by that of SCOUPUS. He added that Iran has scientifically left behind countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt but it can fill the gap it has with Turkey in five years.

The chancellor finally called for scientific dialogue, scientific criticism and hypothesis formation and believed new faculties were needed to attain them.

In his opening remarks, Farhad Rahbar while congratulating the faculty members and students autopsied the cultural hindrances in the way of science and gave suggestions for overcoming them to revitalize the universities. Among the causes, he named historical gaps and said Iran with its colossal reservoirs of references and texts should not leave behind its brilliant past history in humanities or lose her scientific identity. Another important point was his reference to educational groups that essentially lack group work. He also asked for taking care of the elite by just adopting four simple policies: respecting them, supporting their everyday life, monetarily supporting their research proposals and protecting their intellectual property. He had once again condemned plagiarism in the last year’s celebration too.
