A National Symposium to Explore Ways of Taming Non-Communicable Diseases

TUMSPR News: A symposium will be held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on June 8-9, 2008. The symposium will adopt policies, guidelines and practical programs to evaluate the state of non-communicable disease in Iran.


In a report by the Public and International Relations office of TUMS’ Endocrinology & Metabolism Research Center, the prevalence of Non-communicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer are growing. Nowadays, 59% of all deaths and 46% of disease burden are due to non-communicable diseases and by 2020 six non-communicable diseases will top the list of all diseases that affect the human society.

The Ministry of Health & Medical Education along with TUMS’ Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center will hold the symposium for policy-making on combating non- communicable diseases at the headquarters of TUMS on June 8 - 9, 2008. The symposium will explore and adopt the national strategy for controlling and preventing non-communicable diseases. In the symposium guests from the United States and Europe, the Ministry of Health's policy-making experts, IRIB1 policy-making council, the Ministry of Welfare’s Physical Education Organization, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Presidential Management and Planning Organization and the parliament’s commission for health will discuss the state of non-communicable diseases in Iran and the region and look into the predisposing factors and the obstacles on the way of intervention for controlling and preventing these diseases. They will also prepare a draft to clarify policies, strategies and programs for coming years for effectively preventing and reducing the complications of these diseases.
