TUMS PR News: A ceremony to commemorate the late professor Muhammad Gharib was held at TUMS’ Museum of the History of Medicine on May 23, 2008.


In the evening of Friday May 23, 2008, a ceremony was held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences' (TUMS) National Museum of the History of Medicine to commemorate Dr. Muhammad Gharib. The meeting turn out was remarkable and figures present in the meeting included TUMS' chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, the head of the museum, Dr. Shams Shariat- Torbaghan, the late professor’s students from the past days, Dr. Marandi, the ex-minister of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Khatami, deans of TUMS faculties, heads of hospitals, the doctor's son, Dr. Hussein Gharib and the rest of his family, the producer and actors of the movie "Gharib's Times".


Dr. Shams Shariat-Torbaghan, while welcoming the guests, mentioned the moral values of Dr. Gharib and added that introducing and honoring the state’s scientific figures, especially the ones who have had the greatest impact in establishing different fields of study at TUMS, as the main functions of the museum.


Dr. Larijani, TUMS' chancellor, called Dr. Muhammad Gharib as a model in medical ethics for the Iranian medical society and that Dr. Gharib, like great people such as Razi and Avicenna had been the pillars for the development of science in his field. Two student's of the late professor, Dr. Marandi, the ex-minister of Health and Medical Education, and Dr. Rabbani, the head of pediatrics department at TUMS, hoped that the Iranian medical society truly follow his path.


Later on a gallery was named after Dr. Gharib at the museum and personal objects like some of his private correspondence, some books including a prayer book, books from his adolescenthood were among them.


Dr. Hossein Gharib, the late doctor's son, was later introduced an affiliated faculty member of TUMS' by Dr. Larijani, TUMS' chancellor, and the first chair of the podiatric department of TUMS was dedicated to Dr. Muhammad Gharib.


Live traditional music and dinner concluded the meeting.

Mohammad Gharib (b 1909 Tehran) was an Iranian medical scientist, clinician, distinguished university professor and a pioneer of pediatrics in Iran.
