Professor Gilbert Béréziat, the former president of Universite Pierre & Marie Curie (UPMC) and the present special advisor for interuniversity relationships along with the head of international relations of the university, Ms. Sabine Lopez met with Dr. Bagher Larijani, the president of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on June 1, 2009 for academic cooperation.
Professor Gilbert Béréziat, a molecular biologist, in his in-depth presentation portrayed UPMC as the first rank university in France and the 7th best university in Europe and the holder of the 42nd position worldwide according to Shanghi Academic Ranking of world universities. He also introduced the vast number of campuses (33) and went over some figures depicting the size of the largest scientific and medical university in France which has more than 30,000 students, among them 100 Iranian students, 23 of which are studying medicine.
He then briefed the audience on the educational system of the university which very much resembles that of TUMS'.
Béréziat called TUMS very similar to UPMC with their 10000 medical sciences students and their educational systems in his comparisons. The establishment of the university goes back to 1950s and 60s.
Then the vice-president of UPMC international relations explained the university's international strategy for 2009 – 2012 to develop more ties with the outside world and the achievements in this area and called the objectives of visiting TUMS as seeing the most important university of the region in close look.
Béréziat said the UPMC hold the 3rd place after Berkeley and MIT regarding the number of publications but believed the numbers did not represent the number of citations the published materials received.
Likewise, Dr. Larijani presented TUMS and its research and educational functions thoroughly and highlighted the areas of interest to the two universities which were welcomed by the professor and when the chancellor pointed out the chances for cooperation regarding double-degree programs he assured the chancellor of utmost flexibilities of UPMC for endorsing such programs.
TUMS chancellor hinting at the university's international joint programs believed that both universities would benefit from a close cooperation which will enhance research. He believed the reasons for nominating TUMS as the best partner for international cooperation lied within its uniqueness in the region regarding research and the pile of scientific achievements including more than 2000 bone marrow transplants which gives TUMS the third place in the world and the vast experience and high potentials for stem cell research, the discovery of new medications, etc that paved the way for cooperations in the field of diabetes, osteoporosis, etc and possibility of establishing joint virtual programs with short on-site observations in the fields of medicine such as medical ethics, epidemiology etc and Ph.D. programs He then suggested double degree programs which are in progress with the Austrian Vienna University and talked about the feasibility of suggested programs even in the absence of visa as the university has established its international branch on Kish free zone.
In response, prof. Béréziat called the suggestions as very interesting and said "What you just said is what we had in mind regarding research and education" and believed it is time for going beyond traditional links and create more solid ties which not only are spontaneous but also are institutional.
Later on the group visited Digistive Diseases Research Center, Hematology - Oncology and BMT Research Center and Tehran Heart and Center and engaged in talks with the researchers there regarding ongoing research projects.
