TUMSPR News: The clinical outcome after perineal one-stage operative pull-through in the treatment of children with Hirschprung’s disease has been evaluated by researchers at TUMS Bahrami Children’s Hospital. [H]
In a report by the Public Relations of Bahrami Children's Hospital, Dr. Mansoor Molaeiyan, Dr. Hooshang Purang, Dr. Peyman Salamati and Dr. Ahmad Ahangaran evaluated 18 patients with Hirschprung’s disease, referred to the surgical clinic of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Bahrami Children’s Hospital during 2005 -2007.
In each patient, a full-thickness sample of rectum was examined by a pathologist and the diagnosis was confirmed by the absence of ganglion cells or by the precense of transitional zone upon barium enema, and later the patient underwent perineal one-stage operative pull-through.
The mean age of the subjects was 21±15 months and 72% were male. Enterocolitis species and difficult defecation were observed in 22%. Fecal incontinence was not reported in any of the subjects. Feeding was started 3-5 days following surgery but 28% needed N.G. tube. No other complications (such as anastomosis leakage or infection) or any mortality were reported .This study has shown that perineal one-stage pull-through operation is a safe and easy mothod in the treatment of children with Hirschprung’s disease. In this technique, clinical outcome is favorable and complications are rather uncommon.
