Date: 2/2/2010
TUMSPR News: The "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" which has been ranking world universities twice a year since 2004 by their website, is going to release its latest edition including top 6000 world universities for early February 2010.
The "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" which has been ranking more than 18000 world higher education institutions by their website twice a year since 2004, is going to release its latest edition including top 6000 world universities for early February 2010.
As the organization puts it “Web presence measures the activity and visibility of the institutions and it is a good indicator of impact and prestige of universities”. In other words, the resultant rank summarizes the global performance of the University, provides information for candidate students and scholars, and reflects the commitment to the dissemination of scientific knowledge [1].
Webometrics Ranking formally and explicitly still adheres to the Code of Good Practices known as Berlin Principles on Ranking of Higher Education Institutions.
The objectives that the authorities of Webometrics Ranking have built the ranking, intends to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities. They argue that “If the web performance of an institution is below the expected position according to their academic excellence, university authorities should reconsider their web policy, promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications” [1].
In its newest release in July 2009, the first top 21 universities among the top 6000 rival institutions, were from the USA and the first top 10 include MIT, Harvard, Stanford, University of California Berkeley, Cornell University, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Minnesota, California Institute of Technology, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and University of Michigan. And among 133 Iranian higher education institutions, the first top three universities included University of Tehran (rank 987), Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (rank1035) and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (rank 1135).
A recent survey by the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education ranked TUMS as the first university among similar institutions but the criteria leading to the selection were rather different from the those used by Webometrics.
