Date: 8/3/2009

TUMSPR News: TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, reports the activities undertaken by TUMS in the past four years in response to the society’s needs in a conference attended by the Health Minister, Dr. Kamran Bagheri Lankarani on Aug 3, 2009.

In a conference held on August 3, 2009, Dr. Bagher Larijani, the chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), outlined the university’s undertakings to fulfill its responsibilities towards the society in the past four years.

He categorized the activities into two main streams: Scientific activities and the ones to serve the national needs and fulfill expectations from a mother university with a 75-year old history. Carrying out more than 2500 bone marrow transplants, establishing dental material reference laboratory, overcoming and succeeding in liver and pancreas transplants, development of the national influenza laboratory, establishment of the National Institute of Public Health Research were some of the innovations and efforts by the university in this regard.

Establishment of a virtual open learning center offering 57 CME courses, TUMS site with more than two million visitors in the past year, Public Relations site with more than 900,000 visitors show the extent of activities to reach the target audience in the cyber world. TUMS site and that of the Public Relations got an amazing boost regarding services targeted toward the audience and news coverage, respectively, upon appointment of Hojjat Zeraati, and Mansour Gatmiri, two faculty members of TUMS with a brilliant past history in their intended duties. Uploaded pieces of news in PR’s site has had a growth from something around zero four years ago to a figure close to 10,000 in 2008.

The university has also made great efforts to bridge the gap between the scientific activities and the offered health services. The health services coverage has been around 30% and the efforts have been going on to close the gap. TUMS is responsible for the health of about one-third of Tehran and its suburban areas covering a population of about 4.2 million people. To do so, TUMS has devised electronic evaluation systems for outpatient services, making some checklist software, on-site evaluations by the service recipients in hospitals that shows a positive trend depicted in their feedbacks, web-based HIS organization in the hospitals, implementing clinical governance in all treatment settings, increasing the quality of care offered in the hospitals, establishing pharmacies within the hospitals which have had more than 1000,000 clients, more than 2000,000 referrals to TUMS hospitals with 240,000 hospitalizations and decreasing hospital stays in an effort to offer integrated quality care.

As Dr. Larijani put it, the University compiled the Comprehensive Scientific Plan of the University by the help of its faculties in 2008. This plan was suggested to the Ministry of Health for use by the state’s universities.

The University established TUMS Alumni Office three years ago and it was given a decent building in May 2009.

In developing sports activities, the university inaugurated one of the largest stadiums of the country in May 2009. Per capita for the use of sports facilities increased from 0.8 to 1.8 in this 4-year period.

Automating the administrative affairs with more than a-million dollar reduction in expenses, visual clinical ward and implementing a computerized accounting system have all been the fruits of efforts in these years.

Bringing to an end the 20-year long construction of the new building for Dentistry Faculty (with a budget more than $ 8000,000) and the Children’s Medical Center (19000 SM).

Being the head of Medical Ethics Research Center, TUMS chancellor, modestly knew the achievement of the university a sum of all efforts from the past to the present, from the time of the late professor Bastan-Hagh, to Dr. Zafarghandi and to his term in office in the past four years.
