A conference depicting the four-year long undertakings of TUMS, regarding construction projects, achievement in research, education and administrative affairs was held on Sunday August 2, 2009 at Tehran University of Medical Sciences headquarters.
Dr. Bagher Larijani, TUMS chancellor, in his efforts to highlight the university’s undertakings in developing the research, educational and administrative affairs and materializing its objectives, classified the activities leading to the achievements into two main categories: Active participation and presence in the science arena in the world and trying to meet the society’s needs.
To materialize the first category, he outlined the educational achievements including establishment of 20 fields of study at PhD levels, four new post-graduate courses in medicine, 25 fellowship courses, eight masters of science and seven bachelor degrees. All the mentioned courses and degrees have been the first to be introduced into the state’s educational system.
The university has been able to establish two new faculties, Faculty of Traditional Medicine and Nanotechnology & Bioscience. Approvals for the establishment of Faculty of Nutrition and Job Creation have also been obtained fro the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. The university has twice offered medicine for students with bachelor degrees. This is a pilot study in Iran. The university has also produced high-tech medication such as erythropoietin and interferon worth 100-150 million dollars.
If only 81 papers had been published by TUMS in ISI journals in 2000, this number has reached 1260 in 2008. Although TUMS has the 12% of the faculties of the country but it produces more than 33% of the bulk of scientific papers. This undeniable growth in research shows the intent to be the number one university in the region.TUMS presently publishes 31 scientific journals and recently, last week, 20 of these were indexed in EBSCO. Something close to a third of the journals has been previously indexed by ISI Thomson too.
Larijani also went over the efforts to link scientific endeavors with health issues to justify TUMS efforts in trying to establish Health Cities. The approvals to do so have been obtained and the contracts all have been signed and waiting for the kick-start. Kish Island is one of the areas to benefit from the plan.
