A TUMS Faculty Member Will Lead Ministry of Health

TUMSPR News: Dr. MArzieh Vahid-Dastjeri, a Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) faculty member, was proposed by the government as the new cabinet member to occupy the health minister position and was approved by the parliament to be the first woman in thirty years to lead such a high position in the country.


Dr. Marzieh Vahid-Dastjeri, a Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) faculty member was proposed by the government as the health minister and the parliament approved her as the first female to run a ministerial job in thirty years.

Born in 1959 and a TUMS associate professor of gynecology at Arash Hospital, Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi will head the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. She counted this selection and the pursuant vote of confidence as a pride for herself in fulfilling a long-lasting wish for the female population of the country and a new start for more females at the top managerial positions in her remarks following the vote. She had also hinted at the need for an increase in the ministry's budget in response to a question raised by a reporter at the parliament.

In her first day in office, Dr. Dastjerdi has indicated that no programs are behind the schedule at the ministry and one only needs to push for more follow ups.

Mrs. Dastjerdi had been a parliament member twice in her career and her father had once been the head of Iran’s Red Crescent.

Dastjerdi got 175 votes in favor, 82 against, and 29 abstentions for the approval of her new position at the parliament.
