Professor Haratoun Davidian, 85, TUMS Renowned Psychiatrist Passes Away

TUMSPR News: Dr. Haratoun Davidian, the renowned psychiatrist of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) passed away in late October, 2009.


Born in Tehran in 1924, Haratoun Davidian joined as the first resident the newly established psychiatric ward of Tehran University's School of Medicine in 1950 and later he got his specialty diploma from London University in 1958. Returning to Iran, Dr. Davidian engaged in practice, education and research and became the chair of psychiatric diseases in 1968, while he was the head of the psychiatric ward.

In his scientific life span, Davidian authored more than 100 research papers in Persian and in English, and mostly focused on cultural aspects of psychiatric diseases before his retirement in 1991, after 42 years of dedication to his work, students and patients.

He was the head of the school's Psychiatry Department twice from 1969 to 1973 and 1981 to 1988. He also headed TUMS Rouzbeh Psychiatric Hospital during 1981 to 1986.

Davidian was chosen as an honorary member of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 regarding his active role in establishment and development of educational and scientific institutions in Iran and his outstanding international achievements.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Rouzbeh Hospital at 9 - 12 a.m. in Tehran.

TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Larijani, expressed his condolences to Dr. Davidian's family and the scientific community for the loss.
