TUMSPR News: The official meeting of Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education with Ambassadors of Organization of Islamic Conference (O.I.C.) commenced at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on Sunday, January 11, 2009.


On January 11, 2009, the official meeting of Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education with Ambassadors of Organization of Islamic Conference (O.I.C.) commenced at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Kamran Bagher Lankarani, the Iranian Health Minister, in his speech welcomed the ambassadors for Islamic countries to the meeting and brushed upon the health status regarding neonatal and maternal mortality rates in Islamic countries and highlighted the opportunities and threats lying ahead in the concerned health systems and called for a more focused look for resolving the difficulties.

Later on, the Minister talked about the latest news from Gaza and the grave humanitarian situation created by the recent invasion and the siege of the Gaza strip from two months ago and condemned the atrocities committed by the Israeli army and government which were taking their toll on the Palestinian people in a double fashion; the casualties and the wounded from the attacks and the shortage of medical supply and personnel for patients suffering from conditions such as maternal complications during pregnancy and chronic diseases such as cardiac, diabetes, cancer, etc.

Finally, the Minister talked on the objectives of the Second Islamic Conference of Health Ministers of Islamic Countries which is going to be held in Tehran, Iran on March 1 – 4, 2009 and hoped the conference could be a solid step in the health of these countries and bring about success in this regard. He then thanked the Malaysian officials for holding the first conference in the past. The coming conference's motto will be "Health Equity in the Islamic Ummah".
