A National Conference for Policy Making on Non-Communicable Diseases

TUMSPR News: A national conference was held at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on June 11 to 12, 2008 to adopt strategies to tackle non-communicable diseases.
In this two-day conference being held on June 8 - 9, 2008 by Center for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health& Medical Education, TUMS and TUMS Endocrinology & Metabolism Research Center, Promotion of strategies to combat non-communicable diseases (NCD) will be in focus.
On the first day of the conference, Dr. Lankarani, the Minister of Health, Dr. Larijani, TUMS’ chancellor, some international figures from World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank and Chancellors of some of Medical Universities of the state were present.
In the opening session, Dr. Larijani, TUMS’ chancellor & the secretary of the conference, emphasized that "The way to combat non-communicable diseases and updating our information on these diseases are of great importance to us."
He added that, “Achieving a "Healthy Society" is impossible unless we define a clear strategy for NCD control and carry out rational mythological needs assessment a and pilot studies"
The chancellor said that burden of NCDs is now clear to us by the pains taking efforts of the Health Ministry in the past years”.
On the burden of NCD in the world, Dr. Larijani said that, “In 2005, 60% of all deaths have been due to these disease, and the 10-year trend of diseases is in favor of NCDs; therefore, we have to consider these diseases more seriously than before in the health system. In the end, the secretary said that, “I hope we could adopt a clear strategy to tame NCDs by the task force group in action in these two days."
