Tehran University of Medical Sciences / English News Service: The Endocrine and Metabolism Research Center (EMRC) of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), in collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), is going to hold the First International Workshop on Bone Densitometry in March 2008.
The Endocrine and Metabolism Research Center (EMRC) of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), in collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), is going to hold the First International Workshop on Bone Densitometry at Imam Khomeini Conference Hall on March 8-9, 2008.
As the EMRC site puts it ‘Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease that is characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risks. Osteoporosis is an asymptomatic disease and it is an important public health issue because of its clinical expression in age-related fractures. The diagnosis of osteoporosis tends to be made on the basis of low bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is clearly the most readily quantifiable predictor of fracture risk in people who do not still have a history of pathologic fractures. Dual energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is the gold standard for the assessment of BMD and diagnosis of osteoporosis.
The workshop intends to provide the most up-to-date information on osteoporosis in order to help physicians in improving quality of care and management of the disease.
