Delegations from Two Main Italian Universities Visit TUMS Imam Khomeini Hospital

TUMSPR News: Delegations from two famous Italian universities visited Tehran University of Medical sciences (TUMS) largest hospital for prospective scientific collaborations on October 13, 2009.


Delegates from two oldest Italian universities, the 690-year old Ferrara and the 700 year-old Perugia and one of the largest hospitals of Italy, the 1000-bed Saint Mary Nouva Hospital in Bologna visited Tehran University of Medical sciences (TUMS) largest hospital, Imam Khomeini Complex Hospital for research and educational collaborations.

Professor Francesco Carinci, the chair of maxillofacial surgery at the University of Ferrara, in a short interview with TUMS international counselor called the objectives of the visit signing a general agreement between the universities for further scientific research. He then exemplified the friendly relationship the two great nations have had in their past histories and wished this step to lead to more friendship between the two countries. The mission had started from two days ago in Isfahan and then a visit to Rasoul Akram Hospital of Iran University of Medical Sciences. Responding to a question on the goals of visiting TUMS hospitals, Dr. Carinci underlined the importance of collaborating with the oldest and largest university in Iran that plays the greatest scientific role in the country.

The delegation first met with the newly appointed head of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Dr. Ahmad Kaviani. Imam Khomeini Complex Hospital is composed of three hospitals each with separate managerial systems of their own. Then Dr. Kaviani, welcoming the guest, briefly introduced the hospital and its clinical, educational and research activities and engaged in talks with the delegates: Professor Francesco Carinci, the chair of maxillofacial surgery in University of Ferrara, professor Vincenzo Ciaccio from University of Perugia who has skillfully brought about cooperation among health systems among Italian provinces and has greatly helped in establishing the telecommunication system for continuing medical education of physicians in and treatment and education of patients in rural areas and professor Edoardo Dellavalle, a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery in Italy.

Different surgical wards of Imam Hospital and the medical imaging center of the complex were visited by the group and a draft for a general agreement between the universities was prepared. The Italian guest called the visit as fruitful.

The delegation left the hospital for the parliament as they had an appointment with the the head of the legislative body and the health commission authorities there.
