Delegations from Two Italian Universities Meet with TUMS Authorities

TUMSPR News: Delegates from two oldest Italian universities met with TUMS authorities for collaboration agreements on Thursday October 15, 2009.
Dr. Jaffarian, the former dean of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) School of Medicine and the present managerial advisor of TUMS chancellor, alongside Dr. Fotouti, the vice-chancellor for research and Dr. Ghazi-khansari manager in chief of international affairs met with the Italian delegation composed of professor Francesco Carinci from the University of Ferrara, professor Vincenzo Ciaccio from the University of Perugia and professor Edoardo Dellavalle from one of the largest and most sophisticated hospitals of Italy.
Dr. Shaban-Azad from the international relations of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) first introduced the delegates and hinted at the collaboration opportunities for both sides. The group had previously been to IUMS and to Iran University of Medical Sciences' Rasoul e Akram Hospital and Imam Khomeini Complex Hospital a day earlier.
Then, Professor Francesco Carinci, the chair of maxillofacial surgery in the University of Ferrara and a molecular biologist, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity created for mutual cooperation and admired "the Iranian people and their great culture" and believed the relationship would improve ties between the two countries in not just medicine but other foci of interest such as engineering, physics, literature, etc.
Professor Vincenzo Ciaccio from the University of Perugia introducing the university he was representing, shortly talked about the capabilities of Perugia University and the ways the health system was benefiting from telemedicine and virtual continuing education. He said "As the delegate of Perugia University I am happy to be here and happy to have met this beautiful people". He added "Our aim is to make collaboration in research and health care through our institutions and let Italian people know more about Iran and its prominence for research cooperation not only with Italy but also with the rest of Europe". He said "I had not known much about your hospitality but with this collaboration I hope we could come to a better understanding in near future".
Professor Edoardo Dellavalle, a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery in Italy introducing one of the most advanced hospitals of the Italy he was representing said "I am very happy for the occasion particularly meeting another surgeon [hinting at Dr. Jaffarian]. He introduced the hospital and its 40 nuclear physicians with three linear accelerators and one cyclotron that made possible the control of effects of radiotherapy instantly.
Dr. Jaffarian then introduced TUMS authorities present at the session and touched historical aspects of TUMS, the state's health system and the role of TUMS which is responsible for the health of a population of about four million in the capital and its suburban areas, TUMS nine faculties, its faculties such as traditional medicine and medical ethics that are unique to the university, research centers of excellence such as HIV-AIDS, National Addiction Studies, etc and ophthalmology and dermatology hospitals that are unique in the region and the more than 9000 students and 1300 faculty members of the institution. He put the number of hospital beds of TUMS around 4000. He then hinted at the 368th position TUMS and its sister university, University of Tehran had achieved in the recent Times Higher Education and QS ranking and showed the intent of both universities to rank below 200 in near future.
Jaffarian then agreed with the idea of Professor Francesco Carinci for going beyond just signing an agreement and practically start serious research and collaboration.
Dr. Fotouhi, an epidemiologist and TUMS vice-chancellor for research, introduced the 47 research centers under his management and the national role some of them played, such as HIV-AIDS, Addiction studies or the trauma research center. He then noted the 30 journals the university was publishing, among them 7 ISI and Medline journals.
He later belived the research collaborations were the easiest of them all and promised to be of utmost help in the issue.
Dr. Ghazi-khansari, the head of TUMS international relations believed it would be easier from now on for the students who were taking their six month sabbatical leaves to Italy and hoped the occasion bring about post-grad collaborations especially in research.
Professor Carinci concluded that "Now we build the first link, grow together, learn from each other and share information and in future we can expand the level and kind of collaboration".
Agreement were signed between TUMS, Prugia and Ferrara universities and some gifts were exchanged as a mnemonic for this milestone in the three institutions historic relationship.
