TUMSPR News: Dr. Bagher Larijani, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Chancellor, in an interview with Channel 4 TV, calls diabetes treatment an old wish and finding a complete solution for it a challenge.
The chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Dr. Bagher Larijani, in an interview with Iran's channel 4 TV on March 30, 2009, hinted at the valuable achievements in the treatment of diabetes and said: "Our studies during last year elicited a strong point in the treatment if diabetic patients by lowering their need for insulin and at times to states which could without the medication, but the success rates have not been the same in all the participants necessitating more trials and use of biotechnology although they would increase the cost of research!"
Meanwhile the chancellor, who is the head of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center at Shariati Hospital too, added that there were numerous medications in the market but with unsatisfactory efficacy to normalize blood sugar.
The chancellor by pointing at more than three million diabetic patients in the country, believed that there existed vast research opportunities and said that as ideal control of the disease was not attainable by all the patients, it would lead to renal and cardiac complications in the long run. He hoped for more success to follow in the New Year by researchers at the center.
