TUMS' Chancellor at Dr. Mahathir Mohammad’s Affiliations Ceremony Emphasizes Development of Deeper Mutual Academic Relationships

TUMSPR News: Dr. Larijani emphasized deeper academic relationship between Malaysian and Iranian universities at the session held to grant an honorary doctoral degree to Dr. Mahathir Mohammad on Monday, December 1, 2008.


Dr. Larijani, Tehran University of Medical Sciences' (TUMS) Chancellor, greeting the Malaysian delegation and Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, called the occasion an honor to welcome them to Iran and the University and wished them a happy stay here in Iran.

Representing around 1300 faculty members and about 9000 students extended his warmest greetings to the guests and said TUMS was the oldest university and the largest one in Iran and continues its leading role in the scientific field as its ancestor, the county's first modern college of higher education, Dar-ol-Fonoun.

Calling the university the largest and most outstanding university of medical sciences in the country, with9 schools, 16 educational hospitals and more then 40 research centers he said, "We are privileged to have the most experienced faculties in the country and we recruit, each year, the most talented and brilliant students to the extent that it has enabled the University to be a pioneer in medical education and research". He said that the University encourages and promotes international collaboration and has signed memoranda of understanding with several high ranking universities in the world and has paid special attention to research, postgraduate education, and exploration at new boundaries of sciences such as nano- and biotechnology and has established the international branch of TUMS on Kish Island.

The chancellor also underlined the first rank the university has gained six years in a row in research and educational activities resulting into a 10 fold increase in the number of its publications compared to the beginning of the twenty-first century.

He believed that with constant dedication and focus on elements that make up the Islamic and Iranian roots of traditional medicine, the university established the School of Traditional Medicine, and two research centers, named Medical Ethics and Quran, Hadith and Medicine for this purpose.

The chancellor then said "Today, we are proud to grant you the Honorary Doctorate degree in Medicine, Medical Ethics and Traditional Medicine as a tribute to your great efforts and invaluable contributions to the development of the Islamic culture and heritage". Then he said "Your Excellency, Welcome to the large family of Tehran University of Medical Sciences!

He said that in the Islamic Republic of Iran, development had been redefined based on an independent Iranian and Islamic identity. H believe both countries could set up the foundation of an Islamic model of development on the concepts and beliefs valuable to both nations, building ties wih distinguished scholars like Dr. Mahathir Mohammad.

At the end, the chancellor prayed for the extension of relation between the two Islamic countries, Iran and Malaysia.

Upon the chancellor's speech, the former prime minister was granted TUMS' Honorary Doctorate.
