The Second International Medical Ethics Congress in Iran Commences

TUMSPR News: The inauguration of the 2nd international medical ethics congress commenced on 16/4/2008 in Tehran and will last for three days.


The inauguration of the 2nd international medical ethics congress in Iran kicked off on 16/4/2008 in Tehran. Ayatollah Shahroudi, the minister of health and medical education, Dr. Lankarani, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Chancellor and the chairman of the congress, Dr. Bagher Larijani, and authorities in the medical ethics domain from 15 countries were present.

At the opening session, Dr. Larijani, while appreciating the presence of ayatollah Shahroudi and national and international scientists reported the undertaken activities leading to the build up of the congress including reception of 514 papers, out of which 35 were from foreign countries. After evaluation of the papers by the juries of the congress, 123 paper from Iran and 22 from foreign scientists for plan nary sessions and 197 papers were accepted as poster presentation.

The chairman said that the guests from other countries had come from Canada, Japan, Thailand, England, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Switzerland, Sweden, Greece, the Philippines, Germany the United States, etc and the focus of congress would be coverage of the following subjects: Medical ethics from the outlook of different religions and religious sects, the practical issues of medical ethics and how to make them practical and medical ethics education.

In the end, Dr. Larijani talked about the importance and the necessities of medical ethics in Iran and the efforts in teaching medical ethics and also about organ transplant , etc comprehensively.

Then it was Dr. Lankarani’s turn to speak. He first thanked God that the congress had been held after a 14-year long halt. Later he talked on the efforts in medical ethics education such as holding MPH courses with a focus on ethics and holding of master’s degree in medical ethics and trying to hold PhD degree in medical ethics. He then spoke of the efforts done on the jurisprudential aspects of this subject and greater efforts to be done in future.

At another part of the session, Dr. Mubasher Sheikh, the outgoing representative of WHO in Iran, read the message of Dr. Gezayri, WHO’s director general in EMRO.

Ayatollah Shahroudi, the man at the top of the jurisprudential hierarchy, talked on the inclusion of Islamic outlooks in medical ethics and the need for policy making in the interaction among doctors, patients, society and authorities and professional motives and the resources in the Islamic texts about the mentioned items that had to be inferred in this regard.
