On the last day of the 2nd International Medical Ethics Congress, the foreign guests of the congress reflected upon the congress in answer to the questions put forward by the representative of TUMS’ Public Relations office. Below are the comments of one of guests from Japan.

Q- Would you please introduce yourself?

A- My name’s Ruichi IDA, professor of law at Kyoto University School of Government.

I was a member and then chairperson of the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO since 1946 until 2003 and I was the chairperson there from 1998 to 2002. I have been involved in various bioethics discussions internationally, and also at national level. I am the member of different committees in different ministries for bioethics questions like human stem cell research or human genetic research and so on.

Q- Thank you sir. And what’s your general evaluation of the 2nd International Medical Ethics Congress?

A- Well, this congress is very new for me because for the Japanese people Islam is not very popular and I am very happy to have Islamic thinking on bioethics and different questions including medical and research ethics.

Q- How well have you been accommodated? The place, etc.

A- Well, the accommodation is very nice, a very good hotel and transport already assured. The congress hall is very nice and new.

Q- How about the coverage of issues, its strengths and the points that have to be covered in future congresses?

A- The coverage is very wide. In any case bioethics is a very wide issue. So you have many things in bioethics. I was very interested over transplantation discussion today and some other biomedical research ethics.

The subjects to be discussed in future! I think the session on genetic research and its application maybe (was) too small, because the coming new medicine which would be called tailor-made medicine using genetic information is very widely developed. So, in many countries biobanks or genetic databases are constructed now and I think the Iranian government should seek to establish a biobank for the Iranian people, you know, to individualize medicine. I think that's an important point.

Q- I'd lilke to know your impression about Iranians?

A- Well, (He smiles) Iranians are very friendly, and every Iranian I meet is very friendly and we can very easily discuss and very easily communicate. But of course I don’t know Arabic or Persian and we have some difficulty. But in total, I love Iran and Iranians.

- I appreciate for the time!

- Thank you very much.
