Oman Health Minister Visits TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center, Talks to the Chancellor

TUMSPR News: The Omani Health Minister, Dr. Ali bin Muhammad bin Musa visisted Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center and engaged in scientific talks with the chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani on August 6, 2009.
Dr. Ali bin Muhammad bin Musa, Oman Health Minister, visited Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center and engaged in scientific talks with the chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani on diabetes, pancreas cell transplants and the medication discovered by the researchers there to treat diabetic foot ulcers, Angipars, on August 6, 2009.
The chancellor introducing TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center, which has 23 faculty members and is in touch with leading scientists who work on diabetes in foreign countries, said that the center has 197 ongoing projects right now and has published 100 articles in ISI journals last year. The chancellor added that while the prevalence for diabetes is about 5%, the rate jumps to more than 30% in those above 30. The center has published 19 guidelines for clinicians and the patients. Hakim Software for the management of the disease has been developed and is in use by the center too.
Dr. Larijani later explained about pancreatic B-cell transplant in the center with a 12-month follow up that has resulted in the insulin-free states in some of the patients with normal HbA1C values.
He then talked about the medication discovered by the Iranian scientists for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers that has had incredible results in healing the lesions and reducing the need for amputations in severe cases with the minimum to almost none side effects for the medication.
Upon the introduction, the Omani Health Minister, Dr. Ali bin Muhammad bin Musa said: “Diabetes, particularly in our region as a serous disease inflicts 11-12% of the population over 20 [in Oman] with many complications and lots of cost and it has been an important issue for us and we have been looking for a solution and now that there is a kind of hope for these people we admire the researchers and thank you very much”.
