Dr. Lankarani, Announced the Prominent Progression of Liver Transplantation in Iran

Tehran university of Medical Sciences/ Public relations News Service: Dr. Lankarani, health minister announced that the government is paying for the liver transplantation surgeries of patients,causing an increment beyond 50% of liver transplantation surgery.


According to this report, Dr. Lankarani presented some scientific information about liver transplantation & experiences of the transplantation center of Shiraz, in the seminar that had been holding at the conference hall of imaging center in Imam hospital,86/4/21).

Dr. Lankarani gave some information about the history of liver transplantation surgery : the first liver transplantation of the world was performed in 1967 & in 1980s some innovations were achieved. He added, the issue of liver transplantation was propounded in 1990s, however there was no advance in this field. He said that grafting of stem cells has been recently proposed .

He stated that , up to now approximately 350 patients have had the liver transplantation & according to the annual reports, there was an increment of 90% survival. Dr. Lankarani pointed to lack of liver donor & said that it is sometimes impossible to use the brain dead patients’ livers. Additionally dedicators of body organs seldom dedicate their livers & also if the fat level of liver is beyond 30%, then it is a drawback.

Dr. Lankarani compared the complications of transplantation from alive bodies & cadavers: complications of alive graft are much more than cadaver graft, however in EastT Asia, specially in Japan, they usually graft alive body organs & due to knowledge & experiment of them, death rate is insignificant.

He also warned about extension of transplantation centers in the country & said that the background of grafting in Iran is about 40 years, however since approval of brain dead law, transplantation have been increasing.

He emphasized that transplantation is a team work & a graft team in Shiraz involving 5 proficient surgeons of country is at the moment active and at hand. At the end, Dr. Lankarani specified that, transplantation is not only effective to cure patients better, but also is a frontier of medical sciences for publishing new articles.
