TUMS Endocrinology Research Center Visited by the Health Minister

TUMSPR News: The Endocrinology and Metabolism Research center of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) which is located in Shariati Hospital, was visited by the minister of health, Dr. Dastjerdi on January 9, 2010.


Minister of health, Dr. Dastjerdi visited Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on January 9, 2010 and was briefed on the activities of the center, including that of its laboratory. The center had been visited recently be a delegation from the Blaurusian Academy of Science.

Praising TUMS chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani before TUMS vice-chancellors for health and education, respectively, Dr. Farid Abolhassani and Dr. Fotouhi, the ministry's public relations director, Dr. Zarenezhad, and the researchers at the center,the minister said, that Dr. Larijani was one of the most successful researchers in the country and described him as a young, distinguished professor who has endeavored to promote science in the country and build ties between research centers.

On the research activities of the center, the minister hinted at the current changes in life style and the trend towards non-communicable diseases and believed by the increase in life expectancy, the country would need more research centers of this kind.
Finally, she assessed her visit as a positive one and hoped the research at EMRC would lead to tangible results by the support from the health ministry and ministry of industry.

Introducing research undertakings of the center, the chancellor said that EMRC engaged in research in 1993 with a comprehensive look at public health and fortunately it is among the 18 scientific poles of the country. He then described the chief activities of the center on diabetes melitus and osteoporosis with an emphasis on pancreas and islet cell transplants and cell therapy.

The head of EMRC believed that one of the reasons behind the success of the center lied in building a network between researchers inside and outside the country and the key to this being group work. He hoped the center would prosper by proper support to ultimately turn into a focal point for research.
