Date: 4/7/2008
TUMSPR News: TUMS’ chancellor, Dr. Larijani, in his New Year’s visit to the Public Relations Office discussed the importance of the office’s responsibility in reflecting the activities and the agenda for the New Year.
On April 2, 2008, Dr. Larijani, Tehran University of Medical Sciences’ (TUMS) chancellor, in his New Year’s visit of different units of the university, stopped by Public Relations Office, managed by Dr. Seyed Mansoor Gatmiri, to visit colleagues there and discuss the university’s programs for the new year.
While saying happy New Year to the staff, Dr. Larijani earnestly accepted the call for an interview by one of PR members. Here is the 20-minute interview with the chancellor:
Q- Regarding the leader’s naming of the New Year “Year of Innovation and Prosperity”, and the universities responsibility in materializing this, especially TUMS, what are on TUMS’ agenda?
A- Fortunately TUMS had a great many innovations during the past year in comparison to other universities and regarding this nomination we have some projects at hand presently to fulfil. The new buildings for Children’s Hospital and Faculty of Dentistry, inauguration of laparoscopy and laboratory for animal research are presently in progress. And poisoning ward for Baharlou Hospital, a new building for Arash Hospital, defining a new comprehensive role for Arash and Mirza Kouchak-Khan Hospitals in providing gynecologic services, building new emergency departments for Imam Khomeini and Rouzbeh Hospitals are other projects we hope to bring to an end this year.
Dr. Larijani also talked about established round-the-clock pharmacies in some affiliated hospitals of TUMS and the intention to broaden the number of trustee-run hospitals in the New Year. He also hoped that in research domain some of the approved projects in the last year to be finished.
In another instance, the chancellor quoted from the leader that had called TUMS as the symbol of higher education in Iran and he hoped that the university could establish new interdisciplinary courses and bridge the gap between basic and clinical sciences and also start the first round of medical studies from bachelor’s degree.
Dr. Larijani hoped that the TUMS International Branch at Kish develop in the new year and by the help of God the university achieve innovations in research and education, the two main missions of TUMS.
Q- How do you evaluate Public Relations undertakings in the past two years?
A- The recent management of TUMS Public Relations by Dr. Gatmiri has resulted from a key outlook and its from the same outlook that Dr. Gatmiri participates in the governing sessions because we feel that not only this office but also all the subdivisions of public relations at the university are of great importance for us and these justify our call to Dr. Gatmiri to broaden public relations network in research centers, faculties and hospitals.
Q- Noting the fact that public relations plays an effective role in reflecting the activities done by the university, what are your messages for public relations field members to promote their position?
A- We expect they acquire a professional look at public relations issue and take the initiative to help find a position in people’s minds by accurate reflection of authorities’ ideas to them and vice versa as PR is the universities linkage point to people.
Public relations peripheral units at hospitals and research and educational centers could better introduce undertaken activities and services provided by their units. For instance Sina Hospital provides a map to the attendants and I hope these advance and we have to try more in the world of information.
Q- What are your expectations from Public Relations to promote its cooperation with the university’s different faculties, hospitals, etc?
A- Public Relations has had great efforts in visualizing the university’s activities and services and the news launched on the university’s site, published bulletins and Neda Journal are good examples of this despite shortage of human resources in this office but you efficiently filled the gap with other parts of the university and you should supervise peripheral PR units and see whether does not work efficiently replace that person by the help of that unit’s authorities or those who have higher potentials to cover other units’ public relations.
In fact, public relations has a long way to go and you (Dr. Gatmniri) as the manager of the office and your small number but hard-working colleagues are very well doing the job and I thank all of you for the trouble you take and I hope you a more active year.
Q- Could we be hopeful of getting approved the new suggested organizational chart for the office in the new year, regarding the shortage of human resources in the unit and the abundance of activities taking place in the university?
A- As you know, the top chart of the university is approved at the Ministry of Health & Medical Education, and the organizational substructure at the board of trustees. Therefore, by good reasoning we could get the permit passed by the trustees and as our chart has been approved we can make some changes at the subsets of the university, hopefully.
