TUMSPR News: Chancellor for TUMS and the head of Endocrinology and Metabolism research Center, Dr. Bagher Larijani, disclosed the efforts at the center for fulfilling Beta-cell transplant on January 9, 2010.

The chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Dr. Bagher Larijani, disclosed the ongoing efforts for fulfilling pancreatic beta-cell transplant at the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center (EMRC) in the coming months.

The head of EMRC, speaking before researchers and the health minister who was visiting the center, said in the past 50 years, there has not been much control on diabetes and scientists are working on new therapies for the disease such as pancreatic beta-cell transplant.

He said that about 300 thousand life years are lost by Iranians due to diabetes and 500 thousand people have been diagnosed with the disease in Tehran [alone]. He added that diabetes has burnt out 10 -15 % of the US health system budget in the last decade.

The chancellor also underlined the need for seriously considering osteoporosis as it is prevalent in 50 % of male and 70 % of female population of those over 50. He regretted to say that vitamin D intake was not satisfactory either and 40 – 80 % of people have some degrees of vitamin D deficiency.

Dr. Larijani concluded that control of these diseases was not possible unless efforts were made to promote public knowledge on these issues and informed that 70 brochures on endocrine disease and lipid disorders, 1 – 2 million copies each, have been published by EMRC.
