A Swiss delegation composed of health experts from Zurich and Saint Gallen Universities visited TUMS School of Public Health and talked to the school’s authorities to evaluate the ways for prospective scientific collaborations on February 10, 2010.
Dr. Mesdaghinia, introducing his colleagues, tried to illustrate some of the school’s capabilities such as the influenza lab and the role it played in the national health system and said that the school was open to scientific cooperation and exchange of master’s and Ph.D. students for short-term courses.
Professor Felix Gutzwiller from University of Zurich and a member of parliament shortly introduced the Department of Public Health at the university and called the objective of the meeting gathering facts for the establishment of prospective scientific ties with the school. He also talked about the department’s interest to study diseases such as HIV / AIDS in Siberian countries.
Professor Alfonso Sousa-poza, a health economist from Saint Gallen University thanking the Iranian counterpart for the invitation said that despite being relatively young the master’s and Ph.D. programs at Saint Galen’s Department of Public Health had strong cooperation with international universities. He then talked about health topics of interest around the globe and health challenges in this part of the world and the plans for organizing congresses on demographic issues in Islamic countries, especially Iran and the interest to know about Iran’s health system.
Dr. Rashidian from the department of health management at SPH introduced the school’s research activities and interests such as family medicine, referral system, regionalization of hospitals, insurance, tariff for physicians and evidence-based policy making. He then hinted at the University’s first rank in research for the past seven years and referred to the school as potentially the largest health institute in the region and physically the second after Alexandria.
Professor Alfonso Sousa-poza then confirmed the similarities of the educational systems of the two parties and inquired whether the classes were held in the English language and Dr. Mesdaghinia replied that despite English courses the students take and the freedom to talk in the language, it was prohibited to hold classes in English by the law introduced by the Higher Council of Cultural Revolution but hoped it would be revised for the international branch of the university.
Professor Hans Groth, a guest lecturer on epidemiology and health management at the University of Saint Gallen, asked Dr. Rashidian that “you listed some health topics for research but are you looking for international models too?”
Rashidian said that the school studied the Swiss model for the tariff issue but it would consider any language [model] that applied better.
On e-learning possibilities, Prof. Sossa-poza talked about the reluctance to do so at Saint Gallen University as there were too many applicants to register but professor Gutzwiller said that Zurich University had a different approach and they held online epidemiology and health management courses not only in English but also in other languages too.
Professor Groth then talked about the efforts to provide care with dignity and independently and the problem of dementia that would triple to 300000 in 2030 and answered the question put forward by Dr. Pour-reza inquiring about the percent of the population over 65 in Switzerland and said it was about 25%.
Following the meeting the group visited different parts of the school including the library, the department of entomology, the nutrition lab, etc and admitted that there existed great resemblance with those of their schools.
