Dr. Gatmiri, the Public Relations manager of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), sent a message to colleagues and while congratulating the national day of Public Relations & Communication, emphasized the need to more attentively regard the process of communication and information.

The message reads as follows:

I congratulate the public relations day, held yearly on May 16 (Ordibehesht 27, in Iran), to all my colleagues. This day justifies doubling the efforts to regard public relations and communication issues as vitally important. Nowadays, by expansion of societies and exploitation of more advanced technologies, organizations, universities, institutions, governments and international bodies increasingly feel the need to get in touch with people all over the world. Organizations and means of communication undergo complex changes and the need to organize these processes is felt increasingly and the new role of public relations emerges from the heart of these complexities.

In the past, if organizations did not feel the necessity to have public relations or wanted it only for propaganda or commercial usages, today because of the large impact of communication on the fate of organization, smart managers and heads of governmental and non-governmental organizations have discovered the value of public relations in achieving their goals and promoting the position of their organizations . Likewise, public relations are acting as counselling and managing bodies and the main element in policy-making and leading organizations. Without sorting information and recognizing the current processes in different intra and extra organizational layers, no organization would be able to achieve its ultimate goals.

The age of communication, especially the age of high-speed communication, which has presented itself in the from of electronic and online communications, has revealed aspects of light-speed competitions. This is the era where organizations have harnessed the speed of light to reach people “Any where, anytime” to be able to compete with each other.

In addition, the capability of organizations to engineer and shape the public opinion, lead communicative processes to tackle obstacles, facilitate access to resources by creating common goals with rival organizations and the audience and attract new resources, etc are all the essential tools to more success.

Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) with more than 10,000 students, 10,000 employees, more than 1250 faculty members, 9 faculties, 15 educational hospitals, 47 research centers, three district health centers and many more has completed 1600 research projects, has provided direct health service to more than four million people and unique specialized care to all people domestically and even to people from foreign countries, has held hundreds of congresses and seminars nationally and internationally and tens of visits in the level of health and science ministers of countries, some international political symposia in the field of medicine and health by collaboration with ISESCO, OIC, etc, tens of festivals and commemoration ceremonies. Nevertheless, TUMS' Pubic Relations has only 14 personnel and about 150 square meters of work space. Although, over 40 field members of the office help effectively in the advancement of tasks, but the main burden is on the shoulders of the central office's personnel despite limited resources but the question remains unanswered whether with such scarcity of resources the office can materialize the ambitious plans set for the university.

Despite all shortages, TUMS Public Relations has produced and loaded more than 6400 news files and more than 1000 non-news web pages on its web site including over 10,000 pictures, 18 Neda magazines, more than 1000 correspondence for more than 600 advertisements, holding tens of festivals and ceremonies, issuing hundreds of entrance permits for news agencies to the university, production of tens of news and art movies and clips, provision on the compilation of some dissertations, books and educational pamphlets in the domains of public relations and communication especially in the field of health. Additionally, TUMS' Public Relations has succeeded in achieving the third place in editorial writing at the third national public relations publication festival and the first place in programming among public relations of the state's universities of medical sciences.

TUMS' Public Relations’ web site with more than 1,700,000 visits is moving forward to establish a communication system that is worthy of TUMS but it is facing serious challenges and on this day it deserves close attention to solve them ─ a fair and square expectation.

In the end, once again I wish to extend my congratulations for the national day of public relations to all my colleagues and I hope the university would perceive the importance and value of this system and try to promote its position, the way a university like TUMS deserves.

Dr. Gatmiri, Seyed Mansour,
TUMS Public Relations Manager
