The Health Minister of Ghana and TUMS’ Chancellor Meet
Date: 4/21/2008

TUMSPR News: Courage E.K. Quashigah, the Health Minister of Ghana, the director of Health Services and the head of Finance Division met Dr. Larijani, TUMS’ chancellor, on April 15, 2008.

Ghana’s Health Minister and his accompanying delegate, Dr. Niknam, the director of the international relations of Iran’s Ministry of Health and Dr. Larijani, TUMS' chancellor, discussed the conditions of foreign student registration and holding post graduate courses in Tehran University of Medical Sciences(TUMS) and its international branch on Kish Island.

TUMS’ chancellor, Dr. Larijani opened the discussion by briefing the guests on the university’s history, its establishment dating back to 1934, and said that the university presently had 9 schools, 16 hospitals, 47 research centers, more than 1200 faculty members and more than 9000 students,…, 130 educational programs and more than 27% postgrad students.

He added that large hospitals, such as Imam Khomeini Hospital with 1260 and Dr. Shariati Hospital with 488 active beds were a couple of examples out of many educational hospitals of the university and it included 8 scientific poles of the country too.

The chancellor also introduced some ongoing applied research that some of them had resulted in the production of the novel medication IMOD for AIDS and Angipars for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, etc. He also mentioned the high international citation of TUMS papers in Medline, ISI, etc.

The chancellor said that TUMS homepage bore more than 7000 web pages and the coverage of a population of 4,200,000 by its Health Centers. Dr. Larijani invited Ghana’s Health Minister to the second International Medical Ethics Congress, going to be held on 16-18 April 2008 in Tehran by TUMS, expressed his keenness to expand ties with Ghana, and wished the minister the best on his trip.

Afterwards, Ghana’s Health Minister asked a few questions on TUMS educational programs and the methods they were put into action, the disproportionate number of female: male medical students, TUMS publications and journals.

Dr. Larijani answered the questions by pointing out that TUMS with 130 educational programs was moving towards more postgraduate courses and as the materials at bachelor’s and master’s degrees have been taught in Persian, conducting the classes in English would suit postqrad courses more.

Dr. Larijani, in response to the imbalance between f/m medical students ratio, said, “Female students have a higher proportion to male students and we have taken initiatives to narrow the gap. On TUMS publications and journals, he said, “The publications are in both hard and soft copies and the electronic versions could be accessed through TUMS site. At the end, a gift was presented by the chancellor to the guest as a memento.
