Armenia's Deputy Minister of Education & Science, TUMS Chancellor Meet

TUMS PR News: Armenia's deputy minister of Education and Science with his accompanying delegate met with Dr. Larijani, the chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Science (TUMS), on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2008.


Dr. Larijani, TUMS' chancellor, Dr. Ara Avetissyan, Armenia's deputy minister of Education and Science, Dr. Gohar Kyalyan, the rector of the Yerevan State Medical University, Dr. Magadalena Malakoutian, research deputy, Dr. Vladimir Shakvian, deputy for students affairs, Dr. Armen Harutyunyan, deputy for clinical affairs and Dr. Gatmiri, the manager of TUMS' Public Relations office, were present in this meeting.

Dr. Larijani started the session by welcoming the guests and briefed the guests on the establishment of the university in 1849, shortly after Darolfonoon establishment and its break away from the Ministry of Science, Research & Technology in 1985 ─ a national strategy to integrate the state’s medical universities under the Ministry of Health & Medical Education. Later on, Dr. Larijani introduced the university's fifteen educational hospitals with more than 4000 beds, 47 research centers, 1250 faculty members and more the 10000 students, consisting of 60% female and 40% male students, 30 libraries, etc. He also named the university’s 8 science poles and some collaborating research centers with the World Health Organization (WHO), the digital library of TUMS and publication of 24 scientific journals, its International Branch on Kish Island, its growing ties in the region, TUMS web site, holding eight yearly Avicenna Research Festivals and production of new medications including IMOD, for AIDS sufferers, and Angipars, for healing diabetic foot ulcers. The chancellor also briefed the guests on the National Health System.


Finally, Dr. Larijani declared the university's readiness for mutual cooperation, regarding education, research and health promotion, especially for noncomunicable or chronic diseases.


Dr. Gohar Kyalyan, the rector of Yerevan State Medical University, called the objectives of the trip, familiarization with Iran's medical education system and learning from the Iranian experience, especially in the fields of education, science, military medicine, public health and prevention of diseases. She added that Yerevan Medical University had collaboration with leading universities like Moscow, Boston and neighboring universities and wished to add the Iranian universities’ experience to their own.

She also asked for close and continuous contacts, dialogue and cooperation regarding educational methods, methods of research, stem cell research, so on and so forth.


Dr. Ara Avetissyan, Armenia’s deputy minister of Education and Science, said that he had come to Iran as a representative of the ministry of education & science to develop ties between the tow countries and he had welcomed the move to come to Iran and had joined the delegation. He explained that science had undergone great change and Iran and Armenia had to find their place in the present world. He said that any advancement would occur based on that country's culture and any important innovation and invention was made by cooperation between countries.

In his sayings, the deputy minister said that Armenia had recently got its independence and it simultaneously adapted itself to the international standards in the domains of science and exemplified Yerevan Medical University's uniqueness in its international relations at regional scales and that was why they had wished to develop ties with Iran and TUMS in their strategy. He added that Armenians were trying to acquire the recent changes in [information] technology and distance learning and called for bilateral cooperations and said that the minister himself had welcomed scientific and educational cooperations too.


Dr. Magadalena Malakoution, the research deputy of the university, said that the trip had been an enjoyable one but they were eagerly waiting for the decisions made by both sides and the fruitful results it would bear.
