Date: 9/2/2008
TUMSPR News: This year Ramadan, a holy month on the Islamic lunar-based calendar, September 2 to October 1, 2008, will once again be observed by the Muslim world. It is believed to be the month in which the Qur'an was revealed and it is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn to dusk.
It is believed that Qur'an was revealed to Angel Gabriel in Ramadan and later it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn until dusk.
Fasting is meant to teach the person patience and humility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of God, and to offer even more prayer than usual. Also involved in Ramadan are asking forgiveness for the sins of the past, asking for guidance in the future, and asking for help with refraining from every day evils and trying to purify oneself through self-restraint and good deeds. The name "Ramadan" is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground, and shortness of rations. It is considered the most venerated and blessed month of the Islamic year. Prayers, fasting, charity, and self-accountability are especially stressed at this time; religious observances associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month (1).
The fasts of Ramadan were prescribed for the purpose and object of attaining Taqwa (Piety) clearly declared in the Qur'an as obeying the commands of Allah and refraining from all sin (2).
