The Regional Meeting of Experts on the Standardized IMCI & Pre-service education Package Commences at TUMS/ Dr. Larijani in Opening Lecture Hoped That the Workshops could Help Minimize Neonatal & Maternal Mortality Rates
Date: 7/26/2008

TUMSPR News: The regional meeting of the Integrated Management of Child Illness (IMCI) and pre-service education package started on Saturday morning July 26, 2008 at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).

TUMS’ Chancellor's, Dr. Larijani’s, opening speech is as follows:

In the name of God

Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues,

I would like to welcome you to the meeting of experts on the standardized Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) pre-service Education package and I hope that this would be beneficial to us all and we can benefit from the workshops and discussions during the few days to come.

Hereby, I would like to extend my appreciations to the organizing committee, the WHO team, Ministry of Health of the Islamic Republic of Iran and in particular, professor Marandi, Dr. Manenti [The World Health Organization representative in Iran], Dr. Suzanne Farhood, Dr. Kalantari, Dr. Rabanni, Dr. Malekan, Dr. Barakati and Dr. Maffi, Who have made this meeting of experts possible.

As you know, a part of the [3rd] millennium development goals (MDGs) is the reduction of under 5 mortality by two-thirds and also reduction of maternal mortality rates by three-fourths from the 1990 levels, which I believe is one of the right things that through such workshops, I hope, we can reach the expected projection by 2014; that is lower than 25 mortalities among one-thousand live births.

According to the Ministry of Health’s report, the trend of 1-59-month old mortality rates in Iran shows a decrease from 9.4 in 2005 to 5.7 in 2007, although we have some lack of information in some part of the country.

The major cause of mortality is basically found to be congenital and chromosomal abnormalities, accidents, respiratory dipseses, infections and some other minor causes.

Some of the IMCI’s specifications in Iran are implemented by different models in different [Health] facilities.

Starting pre-service discussions and involving the private sector will be possible through centralized interventions and joining well-baby and sick-child care to this program.

Ministry of Health has been implementing this program through reviewing the IMCI strategies from all of the world, orientating meetings, selecting national coordinators and focal points in different areas of the country, training the needed personnel including national and provincial health centers teams, finalizing the chart and recommendation for Behavazes (Health care workers) general practitioners and pediatricians.

I hope through this meeting and the future ones, the IMCI and ECD can be addressed in more detail and morbidity and mortality rates can be minimized as much as possible.

Finally I would like to thank the eminent delegates and participants from Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan and WHO and Iran and I hope you enjoy the meeting and your stay in Iran.

Thank you
