TUMSPR News: Delegates from five Islamic Countries’ Medical Universities signed a memorandum of understanding for future collaboration on February 20, 2011.


Delegates from five Islamic Countries’ Medical Universities, Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Syria and Turkey signed a 10-article memorandum of understanding with for future collaboration on February 20, 2011.

The memorandum achieved one of its objectives, establishment of a permanent secretariat, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), which seeks to coordinate between member universities in gathering, interpreting, summarizing and reporting the shared data.

The other items included assignment of focal point in each university, dissemination of information through libraries, cooperation in education, research and health services, development of a network of academic human resources and establishment of sub-networks in traditional medicine and medical ethics.

Chancellors of Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tabriz and Mashad universities of medical sciences had participated in the meeting as had done the delegates from foreign universities: Dr. Ahmad Pirzad, from Kabul Medical University, Dr. Mohammad Salem Rekab from Damascus University, Dr. Mehmet Bilgin Saydam from Istanbul university, Dr. Awang Bulgiba Mahmud fro University of Malaya, Dr. Riaz Hussain and Dr. Mussarat ul-Hasnain from Punjab Medical College.

TUMSPR: In the meeting attended by medical university chancellors from Islamic countries, Tehran University of Medical Sciences was selected as the permanent secretariat for the meeting on February 19, 2011.


Chancellors from Islamic Countries’ Medical Universities attended at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) to establish a network on February 19 to 20, 2011. On the first day of the meeting TUMS was chosen as the permanent secretariat of the network which tries to focus on closer tiles between Islamic countries for scientific collaboration.

In an interview, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, said the network needed to have a secretariat to develop common interests and get tangible results out of taken decisions. Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has supported the decision too.

On the meeting itself, the chancellors added that the idea of establishing the network came into existence five years ago and a meeting was held on Kish Island and for the last two years we have been working to hold the present meeting by the help of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

The chancellor believed the network will synergize scientific capacities, especially noting the differences between other medical universities and those of Iran that render health services too and that’s why Iranian universities have a high record in health publications.

On the advantages of the preliminary memorandum of understanding and ensuing agreements, the head of the Ministry of Health’s Policy Making Council, said the benefits would include exchange of students and faculties, joint health projects, distance learning, development of new fields of study, creation of links between scholarly journals and alumni, health tourism, and sharing health information. As an example he named the successful experience of bone marrow transplantation by TUMS which is unique in the region and many other capabilities in other Islamic countries that would be available through collaborations.

TUMSPR News: Medical University Chancellors from Islamic countries meet at Tehran University of Medical Sciences to establish a network for scientific collaboration on February 19, 2011.


Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) hosts Medical University Chancellors from Islamic countries on February 19, 2011. The meeting will last for two days and the main objective of the meeting is to establish a network for scientific collaboration.

In the opening speech, Dr. Ghazi-khansari, the head of TUMS International Relations, welcomed the guests from domestic universities, the authorities from the ministry of Health and Medical Education, the ambassadors from some of the Islamic countries and the chancellors from Turkey, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan and Malaysia, and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) representative and mentioned the four objectives from the previous meeting on Kish Island in late May 2007 including establishment of an Islamic Countries' Medical Universities Network (ICMUN), a higher education ranking system, distance learning and medical ethics. He called the main agenda of the present meeting establishment of the network.

Dr. Bagher Larijani, TUMS Chancellor, welcomed the guests too and said the idea of cooperation among Islamic countries universities had formed 5 years ago with the aim of collaboration to share scientific experience in areas of common interest. He reassured the establishment of the network would play an important role in medical, educational, scientific and research collaborations and will pave the way for productive gains. He finally hoped the two-day meeting could bring about a model through which reliable and powerful ties could be established.

Niknam, the acting minister of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MoHME) and head of its International Relations office thanked TUMS for hosting the meeting and said TUMS is playing its important role to fulfill its due responsibilities in the Islamic World regarding its rich history and scientific capabilities. Emphasizing on the modern means of communication, Dr. Niknam called the establishment of a network for the exchange of scholarly information and distance learning very important, something that will enhance collaboration between medical universities and Islamic states alike.

Dr. Sadri, ISESCO representative, mentioned some of the challenges of the present time and said climate change, natural disasters, malnutrition and economic crises impose a heavy burden on medical systems and warn us of emerging diseases and unpredicted disasters, and the best way to tackle them lies in the development of collaborations through a network. He then added TUMS initiative in this subject is supported by its rich scientific background and its leadership in use of modern technologies in the treatment of diseases.

Dr. Mohagheghi, the vice-minister for education at MoHME, believed medical faculties have a dominant role among active scientific institutes and said Islamic countries had established large hospitals and medical education systems which were responsible for public health and its promotion far earlier than foundation of [many] European countries or that of the United States abut negligence, imposition of crusades, betrayal of governments made them fall behind.

Emphasizing on the establishment of a network among Islamic countries medical universities, Mohagheghi said that through removal of boundaries in science and research, exchange of faculties and cooperation in these critical times would lead to a twofold scientific advances and leadership an Islamic countries.

TUMSPR News: The first meeting of Islamic World university chancellors to be held in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on February 19 to 20, 2011.


The first meeting of Islamic World university chancellors will be held in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on February 19 to 20, 2011, said Dr. Ghazi Khansari, the director of TUMS International Relations. Aside from domestic medical universities chancellor, including those of Shiraz, Meshad, Tabriz, Isfahan, and Tehran, university chancellors from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Syria and Malaysia will attend the meeting.

On the objectives of the meeting, Dr.Ghazi-khansari, said the conference seeks to materialize one of the decisions made at the meeting of Medical Schools deans for Islamic Countries on Kish Island in late May 2007 for the creation and development of an academic network. He added that the draft of the meeting had been prepared by the Ministerial Deputy for Education and sent to Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO). Having been approved by ISESCO, the draft was turned to a project and run in TUMS. TUMS was later selected to host the present meeting.

On the meeting's agenda, Ghazi-Khansari mentioned the establishment of a secretariat for the exchange of information, cooperations in education, research and telemedicine.

TUMSPR News: Mr. Kevin Gaskell, the renowned speaker who once helped three of the world's iconic car manufacturing brands to overwhelming success, gave a day-long speech at the International Conference Hall of Iran's Broadcasting Bureau on Friday February 6, 2011.


Mr. Kevin Gaskell, the renowned speaker who once helped three of the world's iconic car manufacturing brands to overwhelming success, gave a day-long speech at the International Conference Hall of Iran's Broadcasting Bureau on Friday February 6, 2011 on an invitation by the organizing committee Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Hospital Management Research Center.

Mr. Gaskell gave his lecture on creative management through telling the stories of two expeditions to the North and South Poles to fundraise the construction of a new ward at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Center.

Joining Porsche in 1987, concurrently managing Lamborghini in 1995-96 and BMW in 1996, Mr. Gaskell led the three businesses to record growth in the three manufacturers' history in Great Britain and lessons from the three case studies formed one of the speeches Mr. Gaskell shared with the audience.

His other lectures were on reviving organizations which were on the verge of bankruptcy, organizational leadership, human resources management and motivation.

The meeting was participated by high ranking managers from TUMS and some insurance companies and Iranian banks.

The Chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Dr. Bagher Larijani, emphasized on creative managerial approaches for sustainable growth at the Conference on New Approaches to Creative Management in Organizational Change held at the International Conference Hall of Iran's Broadcasting Bureau on Friday February 6, 2011.

The opening speech of the meeting, that was participated by high ranking managers from TUMS, insurance companies and some Iranian banks, was carried out by TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani who mentioned the recent scientific growth of the country -- that is 11 times that of the other countries -- and said about 40 active pharmaceutical companies in Iran [successfully] supply the conventional prescription medications. He then attributed the scientific development in science and medical services to the national self-confidence, rediscovery of Islamic-Iranian identity and hard work.

He added that employment of creative managerial approaches for organizational growth guarantee further growth and advances. Dr. Larijani believed a new individual and organizational vision was necessary for reshaping the whole health system and creative human resources could revolutionize any organization.

Later on, Mr. Kevin Gaskell, the renowned speaker who once helped three of the world's iconic car manufacturing brands to overwhelming success, gave a day-long speech and shared his experience generously with the audience on creative management approaches.

TUMSPR News: The website of TUMS Public Relations tops other websites of the university in the "Prominent Website" category at the 12th Avicenna Festival on February 6, 2011.


The website of TUMS Public Relations topped other websites of the university in the "Prominent Website" category at the 12th Avicenna Festival on February 6, 2011 and the director of the office, Dr. Seyed Mansour Gatmiri, attributed the achievement the PR's omnipresence at each and every corner of the university and the valuable efforts of the office's 30 employees and its 70 affiliates throughout the university.

In an interview, the TUMS PR director said the office has been able to post more that 20,000 news articles with more than 8000,000 views in the last 5 years and 60,000 photos have been selected and posted to the site among a reservoir of about 600,000 pictures taken by its photographers.

On the outcomes of the Avicenna Festival, the secretary of TUMS Alumni Office said that the Public Relations' activities have a synergistic effect on both the researchers and employees of the university and the visibility of their scientific products which will promote the university and its objectives in the long run.

On the boons of an active Public Relations Office for every [higher education] institute, the deputy for Education of TUMS Nephrology Research Center said, immediate and accurate publication of the news will rectify the mistakes and help promote those involved in this process.

TUMS Public Relations Office evolved to a digital medium from a traditionally run organization by the help of Dr. Gatmiri who has been in the office for the past five years.

The Office was also awarded at the Electronic Hospital and Telemedicine Symposium in October 2010, which was participated by the authorities of the American Telemedicine Association, for its role in promoting health through its digital media.

TUMSPR News: The 12th Avicenna Festival to honors the top researchers and professors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences was held on February 6, 2011.


Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) held its annual Avicenna Festival which honors top researchers and professors of the institute for the 12th year on February 6, 2011 at the presence of Dr. Marzieh Vahid-dastjerdi, the Minister of Health and Medical Education and the Dr. Fatemeh Soltankhah, the vice-president for Research and Technology.


In the opening speech, Dr. Bagher Larijani, TUMS Chancellor, said a retrospective look at the activities in the University points to remarkable accomplishment while a look forward tells of the long way we have to go and the solid steps we have to take to top the higher education institutions in the region. He also added that the University takes up to 70% of top students participating in the National Entrance Exam for Universities and the University has been recognized as the state's scientific pole for post-graduate studies and it tries to become the regional focal point for health.

Emphasizing on keeping its competitive edge in innovation, TUMS Chancellor said the University has been trying to expand and develop its educational, research infrastructures and develop its international relations, establish new schools, quantitatively and qualitatively develop its educational curricula and empower its faculty members.


The vice-president for Research and Technology, Dr. Fatemeh Soltankhah, praising TUMS Chancellor for his concern about innovation in the University, compared the Chancellor's vision for the University to Avicenna who had mastered different fields such as mathematics, philosophy and music aside from medicine. She believed the Festival served as an appropriate practice and the cause for TUMS researchers to successfully appear in Razi Research Festival.

Comparing the state's universities, Dr. Soltankhah said some universities act as a model for other universities and TUMS is one of those that is doing its due share domestically and it is trying to excel in the international arena too.


Honoring TUMS prominent role among other medical universities in the country, the Minister of Health and Medical Education, Dr Vahid-dastjerdi, said TUMS should assume greater roles regarding its repeated success [in different festivals] and support weaker universities.

Referring to the state's rapid scientific growth-- 11 times higher than other countries-- the minister, correlated this growth to the achievements in medical science and said Iran, second in the region, follows Turkey which has a 5.5 times scientific growth in the world. She later expressed her discontent of the present scientific growth and said by this growth Iran would achieve the highest position in the region in 17 years while the state's scientific plan has envisioned a 10-year period.

Finally, the minister spoke of the great leap in pharmaceutical productions and said by the production of 9 high-tech medications, Iran has saved $ 150,000,000 and by introducing 12 more medications, this figure would rise to $ 250,000,000. She promised drugs of this type to reach 30.

At the end of the session, 14 nominees in research and 24 in education were awarded.
