TUMSPR News: Dr. Ala Alwan, the assistant director-general for non-communicable diseases and mental health, accompanied by Dr. Ambrogio Manenti, the head of WHO Office in Iran attended TUMS School of Public Health to give a speech on the "WHO Strategies in the Control of Non-communicable Diseases" on June 22, 2010.


Dr. Ala Alwan, the assistant director-general for non-communicable diseases and mental health, accompanied by Dr. Ambrogio Manenti, the head of WHO Office in Iran attended Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) School of Public Health to give a speech on the "WHO Strategies in the Control of Non-communicable Diseases" on June 22, 2010.

The assistant director-general for non-communicable diseases and mental health, and former Health Minister of Iraq, Dr. Ala Alwan, accompanied by Dr. Ambrogio Manenti, the head of WHO Country Office in Iran attended (TUMS) School of Public Health (SPH) to give a speech on the "WHO Strategies in the Control of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs)" on June 22, 2010.

Dr. Alireza Mesdaghinia, the vice-minister for health and the dean of the school, welcoming the guests asked Dr. Vatandoust to deliver his presentation which focused on introducing the school and its evolution through years.

Introducing the school's long history, Dr.Vatandoust, put the emphasis on the goals of the school, its academic members, its postgraduate programs, its agreements with domestic and international scientific bodies, facilities, and its national laboratories.

Dr. Ala Alwan, a graduate of Alexandria University and UK and former head of UN in Oman and Jordan, called the visit an opportunity to attend this "prestigious school with adequate training courses in the region" as he put it and recalled his earlier visit to the school 16 years ago and expressed his long time wish to visit the school once again.
He then compared similar public health schools in the region and said "Unfortunately, they lack the integration which is a major impediment for collaboration".

He later discussed “Prevention and control of NCDs: Challenges and response for strengthening of national programs” to give an outline of WHO in combating the devastating effects of NCDs. Trying to do so he emphasized on the magnitude and socioeconomic impact of NCDs, the global vision and the plan for controlling them, a quick look at the present situation in the member states and the need for translating the global action into national action.
