Director of WHO in Eastern Mediterranean Region Congratulates Iran’s Health Minister on National Polio Laboratory

TUMSPR News: The director of the World Health Organization in the Eastern Mediterranean Region has congratulated Iran’s Health Minister on the national polio laboratory’s high quality for 2010.


Based on the news reported by the Public Relations of TUMS School of Public Health, Dr. Hussein A. Gezairy, the director of theWorld Health Organization in the Eastern Mediterranean Region has congratulated Dr. Vahid-dastjerdi, Iran’s Health Minister, on the national polio laboratory’s high quality for 2010.

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Dr. Dastjerdi,

I wish to refer to the visit of Dr. Humayun Asghar, Regional Polio Laboratory Network Coordinator, WHOEMRO, to Islamic Republic of Iran from 15-19 May 2010 for the annual accreditation of the Iran National Polio Intratypic Differentiation (ITD) Laboratory.

I am please to note that the laboratory has performed its activities to a high standard with optimum scores obtained in laboratory performance indicators. Based on the overall review of the past 12 months the Iran national Polio ITD Laboratory has been accredited by WHO for the period May 2010 to April 2011.

It gives me pleasure to congratulate Your Excellency and the laboratory staff for the excellent performance.

I wish to take the opportunity to acknowledge with appreciation the excellent contribution that Islamic Republic of Iran continues to make to the global initiative on polio eradication.

I look forward to continued collaboration in our efforts to achieve polio eradication in the near future.

Dr. Gezayri has also attached some recommendation made by Dr. Asghar to sustain the high levels of performance and has shown his confidence they will be approved by the minister.

The laboratory is located at the School of Public Health affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and has been integrated into the network of polio laboratories run by the World Health Organization since 1996. The laboratory has always been accredited and admired by WHO and CDC.
