The Workshop on the Management of Osteoporosis for ECO Member States Commences at TUMS

TUMSPR News: A three-day workshop on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis for ECO member states commenced at Tehran University of Medical Sciences on October 17, 2010.


A three-day workshop on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis for Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member states commenced at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on October 17, 2010.

In the opening lecture, Dr. Mohammad Pazhouhi, a TUMS faculty member, welcomed the guests from the ECO countries and expressed his pleasure for sharing the moment with the participants referred to osteoporosis as a silent disease said that the disease is highly prevalent in the world and is responsible for a large number of pathologic fractures leaving heavy burden on the society with high morbidity and mortality.


He then hinted at the national projects carried out by TUMS Osteoporosis Research Center and the initiatives it has taken such as fortifying milk, developing the Hip Fracture Registry and running the Multicenter Osteoporosis Study (MOS) in five major cities in Iran.


Later, Mr. Taherian, the deputy general secretary of ECO carried out his lecture and thanked Iran, Ministry of Health and Medical Education and TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute for holding the workshop and said that the presence of delegates from ECO countries demonstrated commitment and interest of their governments to the issue which is highly essential to regional health.


Dr. Vazirian, representing WHO country office and its representative in Iran, Dr. Ambrogio Manenti, took the stage and in her presentation touched on the personal and public burden of musculoskeletal diseases abd referred to osteoporosis as a public health concern as it is more prevalent in the older people and longer life expectancy making it a common health problem.


Dr. Niknam, the director of the Health Ministry's International Affairs Office called the opportunity in lines with broadening joint cooperation among ECO members in the management of osteoporosis and referred to the first ECO health ministers gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan in February 2010 which had drawn up the ways for achieving joint cooperation and said this workshop was the third workshop held the ministry this year which served as a model for the aforementioned cooperation.


Dr. Tabatabaie, the head of the Iranian Osteoporosis Society (IOS) which is a non-governmental organization explained the activities of the society which included raising awareness by giving speech at the Iranian parliament and different social gatherings, publication of different brochures, and launching a website to attract attention to the issue which is seen in about 2 million Iranians 70% of women and 50% of men over 50 are suffering from osteopnea or osteoporosis.


Finally Dr. Mesdaghinia, the vice-minister for health welcomed the participants and hoped they would have a happy stay in Iran, fruitful moments at the workshop and conveyed the message of the Health Minister, Dr. Marzieh Vahid-dastjerdi.

In her message, the health minister, had said the disease inflicted as much mortalities as breast cancer and had estimated its prevalence would rise in the next decade as the life expectancy increases. She had also informed of the comprehensive national project with a 6000-population size being carried out by the Ministry and TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center. She had said the project being one of the largest in the region and had referred to some statistics from the study denoting a 5.4% and 3.2% prevalence of the disease among women and men over 50 respectively which needed to be addressed well.

The workshop has been organized by TUMS Osteoporosis Research Center, TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute and Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

The Iranian Ministry of Health, Economic Cooperation Organization, TUMS Deputy for Research, the World Health Organization Country Office in Iran, the Iranian Osteoporosis Network and the Iranian Osteoporosis Society have cooperated to help hold the workshop.
