QS–UT Meeting is Held on World University Ranking; Chancellor Calls for More Realistic Approach

TUMSPR News: The joint meeting held by QS, University of Tehran and its sister institute; Tehran University o Medical Sciences, accomplishes its predetermined objectives as Dr. Bagher Larijani tries to illustrate the load of scientific work is carried out by the faculuties on October 3, 2010.


The opening lecture was by Dr. Bagher Larijani, who welcomed the guests from QS Asia and City University of Hong Kong , the vice-ministers for research and education and authorities for brand promotion from a great number of state-run universities in Iran. He later expressed his pleasure for hosting the meeting with University of Tehran and briefly went over the history of modern education in Iran starting from the time of Dar-al-Funun establishment in 1849 and college of medicine in 1918 to the construction of the Schools of Medicine, Law and Political Sciences in 1934 and to the affiliation of public health organization to the medical schools in 1994, from the time which the medical schools were [namely] called medical sciences universities.


Dr. Larijani finally touched on the number of faculty members of TUMS which surmounts 12% of all the state’s faculty members in medical universities and the mean annual increase of scholarly publication in ISI Web of Science and Scopus, respectively, 34% and 38%, the 30 scientific journals published by the institution, its 48 research centers, 130 graduate programs and the 40% of all national PhD programs offered by the university.

Dr. Farhad Rahbar from University of Tehran also welcomed the guests from QS, Hong Kong City University, and different domestic universities and signified their presence as their attachment and desire to interact with the scientific community in the world.

Dr. Ghorbani, the vice-minister and director for international scientific cooperation of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and Dr. Ghanei, the vice-minister for Research of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education were the next lecturers who took the podium, before Ms. Many Mok from QS-Asia and Dr. Kevin Downing, a consultant to QS and City University of Hong Kong, and Dr. Djafar Mehrdad, the president of ISC, and Dr. Kayvan Kousha gave their lectures.

An open discussion pursued the lectures which was mostly answered by Dr. Kevin Downing.
