TUMS’ Chancellor Meets Grand Shiite Marja, Ayatollah Behjat
Date: 1/13/2008

Tehran University of Medical Sciences / English News Service: Dr. Larijani, Tehran University of Medical Sciences’ (TUMS) chancellor met Ayatollah Behjat on Friday, January 11, 2008 and called the visit very inspirational for ethical and spiritual issues of the university.

Dr. Larijani, TUMS’ chancellor, Dr. Vaaseie, Research Deputy of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Gatmiri, the head of TUMS’ Public Relations office, Dr. Parsapour, the director of Medical Ethics Center of the university, and a number of faculties of the university visited Ayatollah Behjat, the grand Shiite marja, in Qom on Friday, January 11th, 2008 and enjoyed ayatollah’s guidance for the better management of spiritual issues and medical ethics of the university.

In this spiritual atmosphere, coinciding with martyrdom of Imam Hussein (a.s.), Ayatollah Behjat stressed on Islamic teaching of students. He added that any student or any Moslem, in any position achieved in life, should continue religious studies and refrain from committing haram (Actions forbidden by Islam). He said “If a student becomes aware of religious issues he will not commit sins”. Therefore it is reasonable to teach them to differentiate halal (Legally permissible deeds) and haram.

The Grand Ayatollah said “I am afraid students wouldn’t study and this may cause them to deviate from Islam”.

They should also do their prayers especially in timely manners. Any human being at any position should do his / her prayers.

It is quoted that the Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w.) said “The grace of timely prayers is comparable to my position to the body of believers or in another instance he compared it to ‘the grace of the second world to the present one”.

The Ayatollah also added that if a being wouldn’t study these lessons and wouldn’t pay attention to these quotations it would be similar to the good things locked in a room and not having the key is like the room didn’t exist.

In another parts of his speech, he said that “We should have high aspirations to excavate the gems which the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) has left in hadith (Sayings of the prophet) and hand it to the youth.”

He said a human being should follow the path of guidance and refrain from the path that leads to destruction and perdition and study so much to be invulnerable to Satan.

Finally Ayatollah Behjat talked on the ethical issues regarding medicine and requested medical doctors to visit the poor free of charge even if they could not properly compensate for, as God will thank the doers instead!
