Pakistan Ministry of Population Welfare Delegation & UNFPA Representative at TUMS for Iran's Health System Study

TUMSPR News: The opening session of study agenda of representatives of Pakistan Ministry of Population Welfare and UNFPA took place at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on July 19, 2008.


This study program coordinated by the deputy for Health of the Health Ministry and the International Relations of TUMS, commenced in the evening of July 19th, 2008.

TUMS, chancellor, Dr. Larigani, Dr. Abdolahad, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in Iran, representatives of ECO and the Pakistani delegation were present at the opening session.

Dr. Amirkhani, the managing director of Health Education of the Health Ministry welcomed the participants and thanked Dr. Larijani for hosting the guests and declared the objectives of the program as sharing experiences and exchanging knowledge among ECO members, specifically with the delegation from Pakistan, and hoped tangible results would ensue.

Dr. larijani, TUMS chancellor, while welcoming Dr. Abdolahad, the UNFPA representative in Iran and the Pakistani delegation, said that sharing knowledge and experience at the health sector, especially among countries with common cultural backgrounds and similar problems were important in providing clear strategies for solving them.


Dr. Larigani knew the impact of sharing experiences in dealing with prevention of diseases, preparedness for unprecedented disasters, combating infectious diseases, family planning, etc as constructive. He emphasized that in programs for controlling population growth, cultural and Islamic backgrounds could play an important role in cooperation between Islamic countries.

Dr. Larijani, after introducing Tehran University of Medical Sciences’ capabilities in research, organ transplantation, discovery of new medications [Angipars for diabetic foot and Imode for HIV-AIDS] and Iran’s competence in harm reduction regarding AIDS, narcotic addiction, etc invited the Pakistani delegation to consider collaboration with Iran, especially TUMS by focusing on the Alma-Ata treaty among ECO countries. In the end, he invited the delegation to visit TUMS’ Museum of History of Medicine and the collaboration centers with WHO, Tehran Heart Center, etc.


Dr. Abolahad the representative of UNFPA in Iran, by thanking Dr. Larijani and the Ministry of Health and TUMS, showed his delight in witnessing the progresses made by Iran and TUMS and said that a country with a history full of distinguished scientists such as Avicenna, Rhazi, Kharazmi, etc deserves these progresses and we would undoubtedly see more in future. He also welcomed the Pakistani delegation and hoped they make the best in exploiting the educational and research experiences of the host country.

Dr. Abdolahad thanked TUMS for hosting the delegation, and the ECO office in Tehran for coordinating the program. He also underlined the strategy for similar educational programs in countries like Yemen, Indonesia, China, Pakistan and other ECO members and said that here was the belief that by the potentials present in these countries difficulties could be overcome. He finally hoped that activities undertaken for HIV- AIDS control, development of access to facilities in health sector and sharing experiences be fruitful.


Dr. Amanallah Khan, a member of the Pakistani delegation, said that “Iran is the center for science and health in the region and it has valuable experiences and capabilities in these regards and I think by sharing our experience and knowledge with this country we can gain a lot of experiences especially in the health sector and I hope this program could be helpful to the health of Pakistanis”.


In the end Dr. Shahzad Ahmad wished this cooperation would last to promote health and finally thanked TUMS and the Health Ministry for the symposium.

This 4-day symposium at TUMS, July 19 - 24, 2008 will cover subjects including population, family planning, children’s health, pre-marriage counselling, HIV-AIDS control, reproductive health and Iran-UNFPA cooperation.
