TUMS Chancellor at the Joint Mega Congress of Implantology Stresses the Need for a Scientific Map in Faculties, Universities

TUMSPR News: TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, emphasized on the need for adopting a scientific map for every field of science to be able to locate problems and have a clear strategy for research areas of need at Persian Gulf Congress Hall on December 7, 2011.


The Mega Congress of Implantology / the Third ICOI Congress with guest speakers from France, the United States, Brazil and Taiwan started at Persian Gulf Congresses and Exhibitions building at on December 7, 2011. The congress is a joint effort by Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), Association of Dental Implant Auxillaries (AIDA) and Iran Implant Innovations and it will last for three days.


At its opening speech, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, referred to the finalization of the scientific map of the country and said it mostly focused on research and education and it is intended to cover health services too. He then emphasized on the need for adopting a scientific map for every faculty and university to be able to locate problems and have a clear strategy for research in areas of need in different fields. He said this outlook would bring about growth through structured and futuristic activities.

Referring to the publication of 30% of all Iranian ISI-indexed scholarly articles by TUMS and 40-50% in PubMed, plus the recent indexing of Journal of Dentistry of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in PubMed and PubMed Central, Dr. Larijani said this would create the opportunity to develop international interaction in specialty fields.


Dr. Akbar Fazel, the dean of TUMS School of Dentistry, announced the plans for the promotion of oral health in the country by sticking to the primary, secondary and tertiary services and revision of the oral and dental health curriculum for two-year (technician’s) courses that recruit students from natives of villages to work in Health Houses across the country and would only provide preventive services such as screening, fluoride therapy, etc unlike the past that they used to do minor dental procedures and could follow their studies to turn to dentists. He added that the new curriculum would let these technicians to follow their studies up to doctoral degree in health subjects only.

On the secondary services, Dr. Fazel said dentistswould provide services in 30,000 out of the nearly 60,000 Urban and Rural Health Centers across country and tertiary services would be provided in faculties of dentistry.
