New Academic Year 2011-2012 Officially Commences in TUMS

TUMSPR News: The new academic year 2011 – 2012 officially began in Tehran University of Medical Sciences by the participation of students, newcomer students and their parents, and the Universities steering committee and staff on September 26, 2011.


The new academic year 2011 – 2012 officially began in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) by the participation of students, newcomer students and their parents, and the Universities steering committee, including the Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, the head of TUMS Public Relations, Dr. Seyed Mansour Gatmiri, vice-chancellor for research, Dr. Fotouhi, vice-chancellor for education, Dr. Jalili, vice-chancellor for student affairs, Dr. Mohaghegh and for Cultural Affairs, Dr. Parviz at Razi Congress Hall on September 26, 2011.


The opening speech was by the head of TUMS Public Relations who said “You have been fortunate to be led to the land of knowledge, and to the largest and best of all, TUMS”. He hoped the students could serve the society by recognition of true science. He advised them to respect their parents and professors and value their efforts.


Dr. Moslem Bahadori, the head of TUMS Alumni Office, was the second to give his speech in recognition of science from 4500 years ago in Persia and called it the cradle of science and exemplified some of those glories still present such as the cylinder of Cyrus the Great, the “first declaration of human rights”, to the medical school and hospitals of Jondishapour and Neishabour despite the invasion by Alexander or that of Arabs who set ablaze to large libraries.

Dr. Bahadori, called educating the best students, training unique humans and production of knowledge, the three characteristics of TUMS and said the students were the heir of the great scientific advances of the University and expected to follow this path to greatness.


Dr. Malekzadeh, the former Health Minister and one of the 1% top scientists of the world, was the next person to take the podium. Appreciating the years of holly defense against Iraq invasion, he said the field of medicine was a difficult one and becoming a medical doctor necessitated self-sacrifice and devotion. He said practicing medicine was [one of] the greatest blessing(s) that God had given to man to serve the sick. Being trusted by people was the main asset of medical doctors, he said.


Dr. Parvin Pasalar, the head of TUMS Talented Students Center, introduced 7 rules of success, planning, maintaining high spirits, time management, understanding lessons, giving and getting feed backs, being multidimensional and doing evidence-based practice in her speech and encouraged the new-comer students to study basic sciences in depth.


Putting the emphasis on seeking science, Dr. Shafiei, the former dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, said the Country needed the students to help eradicate illiteracy and solve the problems.

He also emphasized on the ethical issues and encouraged students to pray God as it was the way to beatitude.


Finally, the Chancellor congratulated the new academic year to the students and their families and shortly introduced the undertaking of the University and its educational and research frameworks. He said by 80 research centers the university had been able to organize vast educational and research activities that had gained both honor and reputation for the institute.

On the international achievements of the University and its faculty members, the Chancellor said the University accompanied by its sister institute, University of Tehran, had gained a position between 3001 – 400 among 1000 top universities of the world in July 2011 based on Shanghai ranking of world universities. TUMS also had achieved the 1278th rank in Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI), he added .

He finally urged the students to shoulder the responsibility for developing their talents and the University.
